When you colonize your first few planets, make sure you upgrade your civic infrastructure before explanding too quickly. New planets will actually drain your economy until they are upgraded! No problem cannabinoid, Just go to Menu > Options > Effects and turn off "Use Deep Space Backgrounds" Now you are all set, You'll only get the bright colored ones :)
