"Having more options makes for a more interesting choice" - but you don't want choice (other than the trivial-by-comparison which one first?), you want everything! A fully open tech tree with every technology available doesn't give you more strategic choices and decisions to make, it gives you less. You can have everything, whats to choose? Less choice equals less strategy. You don't need every tech, you don't need every planet a

OK, this will (eventually) turn into a Drengin AAR...the wretches in the slavelings lab are having issues sizing and placing the screenshots correctly (clears throat) A few hours in the pain amplifiers will improve their performance. Its an Immense galaxy, common planets/habitiable planets, abundant & scatttered stars, abundant anomalies b

Been playing TA for a while now, and was getting sick of the performance of the AI for the evil races in particular, but also Iconians and Arceans. I like playing as the Yor, but as I've gone up in difficulty I've found it tough being evil, as the Drengin and Korx start weak and stay that way 'till they get whacked, so are no help against the good & neutral races that inevitably decide that I am just too evil to live. Or get upset when I start invading their planets and taking over t

Question: once a planet's population is maxed out, isn't the approval rating kinda irrelevant as long as it isn't so low that the population is declining? (and even then, so what?) Sure, the overall approval of your empire is important, especially at the start where the PG bonuses for 100% and 75% are worth juggling the sliders for (especially for Torians), but don't the individual planet ratings become more and more irrelevant as the game goes on?. Isn't it

Jeez, harden up! Where's the rule that says you have to win every single computer game you play? If thats what you want, use the cheat modes, you can finish all research in one turn. Of course then you'd have to find something else to pi$$ and moan about, though I get the feeling that wouldn't be a problem for you....

Question: do the odds of getting economic events such as the "boom" and tourism & trade increases decline as you go up in difficulty level? Going from Challenging/Tough, where there seemed to be several of these events in the course of a game, to Painful/Crippling, where I have now played 4 complete games with just one in total (random events setting left unchanged at frequent). I'm assuming it does decline, as it definately makes it harder!<

Early on I'm just looking to have enough of a military rating to bluff the AI into not trying to extort me or seeing me as vunerable enough to attack; 2 or 3 "quality" ships in the orbits of 2 or 3 planets is usually enough to to earn the AI's grudging respect, but no way is it worth doing it for every planet. Building ships without engines maximises the space for weapons, and therefore your rating. The only times I've been attacked early on is when I have ignored my military in

Early game, and at least up to the point where you have decent engines/weapons/shields and plantary invasion techs, isn't it better to keeps your ships in orbit where they get a bonus to their ratings, which boosts your overall military rating, deterring the AI from attacking you? Early on the ships are so slow and impotent, there seems little point in going to war with anyone, so my military vessels have no engines; they just sit parked in orbit. Once I have medium hulls and engine t

I'm about 2/3rds of the way through my second ever game as the Torians; I'd never played 'em before, even with DL or DA, dunno why really, just preferred the other races. But, I decided to give them a try for to see what they were like...and holy s#!t!! They are by FAR the easiest race I have played with so far. My second game with them, Crippling difficulty, Immense / abundant everything / 9 majors 5 minors / conquest only enabled, I got 80% of the galaxy just from colonising

To upgrade all ships of a specific type to another specific type, just select one ship, and click the upgrade option, and in the screen that pops up just above the list/pictures of ships you can upgrade to is a check box "upgrade all ships of this type(class?)" tick the box, and you'll see the cost of the upgrade multiplied out by the number of ships involved.

In TA, the all labs and all factories strategies have been made tougher than they were in DA/DL, the loss of production through 'focusing' is greater than it was previously, which makes a huge difference. IMHO this makes a mixed approach vital at the higher difficulty levels unless you are a freakin genius at this game and can tweek everything every turn for optimum outputs - (and I'm not), but several that are have posted their "how-to" guides for "all" strats in TA

Gotta disagree with Willy about the Yor's weaknesses including economy....their passive economic bonuses rock because they don't use up any planetary tiles the way that econ building do, meaning more research and/or production per planet. Plus they get the efficiency centre, and the maintenance grid, which helps you keep tax, and therefore cash, high. And if you do trade for or steal tech that allows you to build trade centres or stock markets and/or morale buildings, the

I've found a "work around" for the AI that seems to make the games more challenging and less predictable. In every game TA I played only the Terran and the Torians proved to be a threat; both would colony rush well, take resources, build up their military consistantly and make reasonable diplomatic decisons. The Thalans would expand like crazy, but never built their military or even research weapons tech; they always surrended pretty quickly once someone declared war on them..the evil ra

As far as I can work out, you have to have researched or stolen the tech that allows you to produce the building to be able to capture it; so if you can't build a Logistics Centre because you don't have the tech, you can't capture one. Last TA game I was playing I was capturing Terran planets which were coming up almost completely empty, just colony bases and starports, then I started capturing tech during the invasions and where the tech led to a building - discover

On continuing a TA game this evening the same thing happened; the Drath, who occupy territory way over the other side of the map and have no ships anywhere near me pop up with a tech announcement, and then don't appear in the foreign relations / UP screens. I'm absolutely sure the game disregards this as "contact" between the two races because you do not get the button "speak with (or is it to?)" when this comes up, but when "real" contact is made and they appear on your screen

Sorry, I don't think this is a bug at all, I have seen this frequently (on immense maps especially) where a major race I haven't met suddenly pops up on screen and says something like "tremble in fear cuddly creatures! We are now researching yadda yadda yadda.." After this "event", they don't appear in the UP or the diplomacy screens UNTIL I run into one of their ships and/or planet in the course of normal gameplay, after which I can interact with them normally. I presume

I think you will find that these races that "vanish" are MINOR races, and can quite easily be contacted once you've met them by clicking the big tab that says "MINOR RACES" on your Diplomacy Screen. They do not appear on the same screens (and UP) like the major races do.

Why does trade not scale appropriately with the rest of your empire? At the start, getting trade routes up and running can be crucial, those few extra BC's trickling in can make all the difference between running at a deficit even with tax maxed and the production slider pulled WAY back to the left, and having a positive income and production settings where you choose. But after not too long, the BC's you pull in are insignificant compared to tax and tourism revenue, even if th

Jeez, you guys don't want much, do you?....just an AI that is as smart and adaptable as a human player. What are you running your games on, a HAL9000?? And multiplayer for a strategy game as layered and complex as GalCiv ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT WORK! its hard enough playing real-time strategy games on-line without one or more players spoiling or quitting or sabotaging, never mind a turn based game. I used to play MOOII on-line, and that is a much more basic game than Gal Giv, and I think

So far, it seems that 2.03 has corrected the non-expanding empire phenomenon, (to the point where the Torians are a major pain in the a$$ in my current game) and from my observtion the AI is utilising its planets better, taking advantage of bonus tiles etc

[quote]If it is more beneficial to be evil, then why do evil civilisations fail to prosper throughout history? History shows that most evil civilisations fall behind economically and technologically, just look at North Korea for example. Um, how about the good ole US of A? They are kinda prospering right now, and you could hardly describe their actions and motives as being "good" or even halfway "neutral". Maybe they could inspire some events in TA; your civilisation coul

I love the Battle of the Gods scenario, but it really cheeses me that you can't choose an ethical alignment. At the start of the game, you have all the techs, including all the Ethics/Good/Evil needed to make the choice, BUT you never get a chance to select which alignment you want. You can upgrade to Star Democracy straight away - you have all the government techs - but there is nothing you can do to be good, neutral or evil. This is a major handicap during the game, as not only do you miss out

Question: how do you update your registrations in Metaverse?/ I have tried n tried to add Dark Avatar to my Registration list, but it just shows original Gal Civ II and Stardock. I finished an epic DA game on Metaverse, went to post and got message that the game wasn't registered to the account. WTF???
