Frogboy's last post confused me again. The bold text is getting to me. You don't have to archive your stuff after your subscription expires. It's simply that if you reformat your computer or buy a new computer you can't access newer versions of Object Desktop once your subscription expires. For simplicity, I'm going to use example version numbers for this hypothetical scenario. Please read carefully.&nbsp

It (homeworld source) wasn't GPL'd (or released under any FOSS compatible license, i.e., it's not open source). It was released under an RDN license - free to modify/use for non-commercial use. Relic retains the rights for the code released, and as well claims rights to use/distribute/sell anything produced with that code. Since Relic changes their site organization periodically, the old links on RDN I have from DoW don't work. You can get the source, which includ

You need to bark up both trees. That is, raise the issue up with Avencast people as well - because regardless of the final resolution/status of the Impulse version, they need to get the relevant files to Stardock in order for anything to happen.

No one was looking for free updates outside the subscription period. I don't think WoW comparisons are valid though. Their model differs. For example, I cancelled my WoW sub, but I can download updates to the client no problem. Here, we're not looking to download updates outside the sub period. What was lost was key feature of good DD services: Ability to obtain your software indefinitely. It doesn't look like Stardock is setup to handle that, for subscri

This policy change - and afaik, license change - needs a corresponding Impulse UI change. If you're making a distinction between Object Desktop and every other piece of software available through Impulse by limiting access to only one year, then you need to have the corresponding UI to support such limitations and distinctions. Reminder nags don't cut it in this regard, since the end result is that the customer can permanently lose access to the product if they don't understand the

If you've played Demigod, you will see some influence of that game in SC2. For example, the change relating to tech trees, where you upgrade everything through increasing Research, reminds me of how Demigod characters and buildings and AI units get upgraded. On the plus side, this makes what we would normally think of as Tier 1 units still useful late into the game, because the first units you create get upgraded right along with everything else. This is nice. The poss

@HoodyCrow, renting and licensing aren't the same. Jafo or another Stardockian can certainly correct me if necessary, but the license terms for ODNT that I had indicated I would have access to the software version that was current at the time of the annual expiry. It may be that there is a technical hurdle to overcome in having that access streamlined through the Impulse Client, but that's a tech challenge for Stardock to manage and doesn't change the license terms.

Contact Stardock sales/support re: your question about discount pricing on the CD. For archiving, right click the game in the My Games tab of Impulse and select Archive Application. Burn it disk, thumb drive, whatever. In theory, since I've not tried it, you then go to the Impulse menu (top left, above the left and right arrow navigation buttons) and select Restore Archive. You will need to do all of this through Impulse. I also do not know if there ar

I got the key I needed yesterday through my gmail archive where I found an older response from the system that had all the keys shown. I was trying to get the ODNT subscriber discount for CursorFX Plus while placing the order on a laptop that didn't have Impulse installed. So I used the web page form Neil linked then to get the ODNT serial...but the keys weren't in the email response. Later, I moved to a system where I did have Impulse installed, and used the Impulse Client

Past couple of days I've been doing some impulse shopping (har har) and installing stuff on a rebuilt laptop of mine, and I've needed to look up account names, serial numbers for past purchases (to qualify for upgrade/discount pricing, etc.). The automated email responses that (usually) send me a long email with everything I need are now missing the critical info... the serial numbers... for every product I've ever purchased through SDC and Impulse. Example line i

Here are some concepts, phrases, and fragments that anyone wanting to speak authoritatively about perception thresholds of the Mk II Human Eyeball really should know about: * analog * digital * individual threshold of perception * illusion of motion * Application/game frames per second * Monitor vertical refresh rate * CRT monitors * progressive and interlaced scanlines * For the US audience (and perhaps a handful of other countri

I play almost exclusively single-player and don't usually follow this game forum, so seeing a new DG was an unexpected bonus. Thanks Stardock!

I have a tablet convertible laptop now for a couple of years. I like the looks of the newer 'tablet-only, no convertible' aspect of these devices, but I question practicality. As it stands, I tend to use the laptop form more than the tablet form. What I do think might have potential is increasing hardware capabilities of the so-called smartphones. I will likely have an Android OS powered device shortly, and it will be my first PDA-type device since some old Blackberry

Weird listing. I wish I were ambitious enough to start an internet security firm in the comfort of my own basement, where I offer paid tests and evaluations to firewall software firms with a proviso that if they pay up and don't like the test results, they can opt to keep them private and unpublished. That matousec guy and his college buddies were pretty sharp. The only thing that would make their operation perfect would be if they published verified, repeatab

I'm bringing my system back online after a hardware replacement/upgrade, including a new OS install (7 RC 7100). Installing Impulse Client for the first time, and I happened to pick Ready To Play as the first 'game' to install. The result was an error, and I believe it's because I had no games installed and run prior to trying to install and run Ready To Play. I say this because the error message indicates it's not finding: C:\Users\[MyLogon]\AppData\L
Aesir, I'd hope that every company's latest major title is intended to be their "magnum opus."
While that would lead us to some form of a gamer's Nirvana, you and I know from experience that some titles do not qualify for the description of "classic" or "great" - much less what I had in mind when I used the term "magnum opus". Here's a good description of what I was thinking of when I wrote "magnum opus" instead of (for example) "masterpiece": <a
