I got hit with the Plague mega-event in the game I just finished. I jacked up research and got the cure in 3 turns, and the Drengin got it in about 15ish (it looked like they finished what they were researching, then went for the cure). Everybody else just kinda died off because they wouldn't offer me an even remotely worthwhile price for the cure tech (as in they'd accept paying 200bc or so, tops, for a tech that would literally save their empire ).

Asteroids may not have much effect on the mega-factory industrial worlds, but they can really help a planet that doesn't have as much production as it needs. I've seen build times on my (minimally industrialized) cash worlds and research worlds cut by a quarter or more just by diverting a few asteroids over to them.

- Sometimes my ships fire on my own ships instead of the enemy ships! (just visuals) But the enemy gets the damage. I got something like that in my last game, too. During fleet actions, the enemy would start dealing damage to one of my frigates, but the shots would go after the dreadnought leading the fleet. So I'd be seeing my dreadnought getting pummeled until a frigate on the opposite side of the screen exploded despite looking like it hadn't been

Hmm... Starship Troopers , by Robert Heinlein, was the first thing that popped into my head. I'd also recommend Timothy Zahn's Thrawn and Conquerors trilogies, since his books are well-written, fairly fast-paced, and the big battles in his stories are just the right size to "feel" big without becoming too impersonal to be exciting. If you care more about scope than actual quality, you can try John Ringo's Legacy of the Aldenata series. While nobod

One indirect way would be to contact them, then skim through their tech list looking for the colonization techs that they have and you don't, and through your own list of tradeable techs for any you have that are missing (indicating that the AI has that as well). For example, if you've researched Barren and Toxic world colonization, and the AI's tech list in the trade screen shows Aquatic world colonization, while yours only shows Toxic, then the AI has Aquatic and Barren world colonization. A

In Frogboy's write-up of The Drengin/Human Wars XXI, he said that "Only around 5% of users should be able to beat it at [Tough] level". My question is: is that true of DA, and if not, what's a better estimate?

You could build a vast network of sensor-laden ships to watch the fighting. ...not sure if that's the sort of "watching" you're looking for though.

tetleytea covered most of the points I can think of, but a couple more: --Espionage can be a very effective tool, but it can also be neutralized. Spying on your neighbors is now a lot more interactive than bumping up a slider a couple notches, waiting a few turns, then bumping the slider back down. --Fighting a battle is a LOT more dangerous to your ships. In DL, I would often give my dreadnought classes names like "Fleet-Slayer" or "Nation-Killer" because I could load them u

Thanks for the replies, especially Yamoda. That's exactly what I needed to know. When the AI is running at full (with the intensive CPU option on), does it do better at "tactical" things, or, if I lose, is it mainly going to be because it's beating me with it's "economy"? Simply getting crushed by numbers isn't always fun. Oh, and if someone knows, if "blind exploration" is on, is the AI also "blind"? I guess even if it isn

Need to ask something else as well: is there really any point to building the various capitals other than fluff? For example, the Manufacturing Capital gives only a 25% bonus to production, while a quantum power plant gives 100% for half the price. The Economic Capital is just two stock markets with an inflated price tag. It doesn't seem like they are worth the investment, TBH. I haven't played DA, so to respond to th

For TBS, just a couple weeks ago I finished up a game of X-Com, the greatest TBS of all time. But I had just gotten a big paycheck and decided to buy GC2...and have been playing that ever since. I haven't played any RTS games in a couple months, but the most recent was Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. I had liked the previous Dawn of War incarnations, and decided to get DC when it first came out. It was well worth the money.

No, just that if a ship with multiple weapons destroys one target without firing them all, it can fire the rest on another (and another, and another, until all it's weapons have been fired). So capital ships can now cut through fighter swarms with ease, rather than picking them off one per round. Bad design decision imo, currently there was little point in having smaller ships. Now they will be completely pointless which will make t

Hi there, I started playing this wonderful game a week ago. My friend, who had bought it, told me to try this game. I do not have a copy yet, but plan on buying one as soon as I go near the game retail store. Alright. I am an hardcore player of Star Wars Rebellion. This old, basic game was so fine in my mind that no game since had come even close to "replace" it. Now, there is GalCiv 2. Than

and c) higher tax income Exactly. The econ buildings are multipliers, so one world with 18b people and 3 banks will bring in more money than 3 worlds that each have 6b people and 1 bank. It'll also get up and running quicker since you only need one world's worth of factories instead of 3.

I see two things that many people seem to be overlooking: Civ 4 and the quality of GC2's AI. 1- Civ 4 Civ 4 has had multiplayer from the start. It was designed for multiplayer, with lessons learned from Conquests about what works and from Play The World about what doesn't. It seems likely to me that the vast majority of 4X players who absolutely, positively MUST have multiplayer will have chosen Civ4 (or SEV) over GC2 a long time ago. Conversely, all those playing GC2 h

This thread has inspired me to make my first post on these boards, just so I can add my vote for either a confirmation of some sort (i.e. a "Cancel" button on the "Do you want to scrap the existing ships of this model" popup) or some way to "un-obsolete" a ship. It's frustrating to spend half an hour making a really cool ship design, then lose it for the rest of the game when you accidentally click a half-inch too far to the right.
