onomastikon wow Lots of stuff in there.....not even gonna attempt it. I tend to "try" lots of games. I once had a small closet lined with shelves so that i could put all the games i had purchased in it. Must have been hundreds and hundreds. Like you, I play them until I get it, and then they go on the shelf, or in the closet or even in the trash. I have a very few that I think have replayability. GC1 was not one of them. Moo2 was. Moo2 is now in the closet. I

I think this is a very interesting topic. I've noticed in play that all is peaceful for many turns and then suddenly everyone is declaring war on one another. There has to be a time trigger or an event trigger that causes the ai to suddenly want to go conquering....From my experience, the ai will go after what it perceives to be weaker factions. It appears to use its military rating. However the assessment used by the United Planets voting points seems closer to the actual power.

Oh, I need help too....there are some excellent books out there, but one i remember really enjoying was about space invaders attacking medieval earth and getting creamed by the knights. It was fun and funny and a real testament to the human spirit. If i remembered the name i'd try and buy it as a used book....its worth reading every 5 or ten years. Reading about aliens getting nailed by arrows and axes, it was quite enjoyable. I should post this is the geezer thread, for sure someone there h

Only part I am sure of is answer 2 cause i use it all the time..... You can rename bases...when you highlight the starbase, there is a little icon in the upper right of the highlight of the starbase, click on it and you can rename it to whatever....i usually use completed starbase, but i could get more creative like "17% prod" , or "17% prod 10% trade" so I know what i need to do with it...someone may have a neat algorithm already set up for that so you can efficiently know the status o

each race has only one treaty of econ and one treaty of research to trade, once it is traded, it won't show up on the trading options. So if you've given research to another race, you won't be able to offer it anymore. If the race you want a research treaty from has already traded it, it won't show up....simple as that...certainly not deeper...hah.

My 2 cents worth.... I've been burned with the out of memory error too. Lots of times...like others. Usually occurs after an hour or two of lots of ships and planets. I wouldn't play without autosave, so, every hour or so, i quit the game and restart. Not what I want to do, but darn, it works so effectively. I would note that when the sound gets a little garbled or crackly, that's usually when its about to bomb on the save. I have lots of memory and the latest release and it still

I'm glad you posted what a hot seat meant, because i've always wanted the ability to swap races mid game.....once i start to dominate, i'd love to take a race that was weaker and see if i could build them back to dominance....I currently take a set-up and then after i win with one race, i try the other races one at a time to see if i can still win.....seems to help me understand the various races a little better and its lots of fun to kick one race into submission and then play that same race th

oh the old commodore...what great fun....elite was excellent....anyone play red storm rising? sub(marine) game. Elite was just about everything you wanted. I'm sure the graphics would be laughable today....but i wore out many a joystick playing that game. Hated to see that rig go....had lots of games....

Since my last post, I've loaded the heightmaps and minimized all those settings. I have not downloaded beta 5 if its available. But after the heightmaps was still able to get the out of memory after about 2-3 hours of gameplay. I am at 2 gb of ram and a 4 gm ram pagefile. It doesnt seem to use that tho. Last crash I looked at the ram allocation (which I've heard isn't all that accurate) and the ram use was 1.3, so I don't know what unless its trying to save something greater than that again

Happy Birthday Belatedly! I really don't get any part of the criticism for figuring out strategic ways of beating the game. There are certain things I don't build, even though they are offered as things to build...is that an exploit too? Choosing a planet design that works for you is half the fun of a game like this. Telling people how you set up your planets is offering a personal insight. I really don't understand how you could offer an argument in a strategy game forum

Just to add my 2 cents worth....I have a desktop that's what i would call mid-range...on large and larger maps I had this out of memory situation occur prior to the latest beta. I am currently using my wife's really nice upper range lap top (dual core 2 gig of memory 4 gig pagefile) and the latest beta and am getting this error on a large map about every two hours. Now I've got it timed so when it starts to act a little froggy (not frogboy, froggy), I reload it and lose a turn to the AI. <

Wow....lots of passion in this thread. I love the game. Much so, because it is stable. I don't get the CTD's that others have had, so that makes it great. I remember playing MoO and saving every turn cause I knew it would crash soon. I don't know what's involved with CTD's but that should be a priority for fixes (if it represents a sizable number) because it creates a very negative environment for those players affected. As for the turn advantage issue. I don't care. At

Feeling pretty ancient around this crowd at 53. My wife lets me play when she is watching trash tv. I usually get 1-3 hours of "play time". Its all DA for me. I have other games...most recent purchases is a texas hold-em game and the newer star wars rebellion look alike. They are both ok, but don't hold my attention like DA. I played MoO II for years and years....matter of fact, it just got retired when I got DA. I played the original star wars rebellion for years also..alternated between

No, Wyndstar, I envy your life. But my wife would kill me....if I can sneak 2 or 3 hours a nite I am lucky. I play on huge maps, so, its a week or two for me to finish a setting. Thanks so much for your analysis, it makes much sense and is very helpful, cant wait to try it out. Also thanks to Mystikmind....that sounds like a good cost cutting measure!

Wyndstar you have piqued my interest on this thread. It seems to me that the combat ai generally picks on one ship in a fleet. Is there a way to trick it to go after the defense ladened ship and have other ships in the fleet with the offense? What I am imagining is a fleet with a strong defensive ship and several smaller offensive ships so that the defensive would take the attack of the ai fleet, and the offensive ships in my fleet would be able to attack the ai. That would seem more efficie

It is a great day because I'm here to write this! What a blessing! There are many people who don't get to enjoy such a luxury. Literally billions around the planet. It is a great day because its a beautiful day outside...sunny and warm. And its a specially great day, because tonite i get to frag the terrans who unwisely declared war on me late last nite. I was nearly done with the evening play time when they did that, so, today, they learn their hard lesson. I know people have CTD

My Experience, for what its worth....I play it as a strategy game. I usually play at normal difficulty, and while I like a challenge, I like to win. I read the other players tactics and they are very helpful, but I temper it to my gamestyle. And, basically, what I see with the AI is that they are very efficient at running up their Military, they are soemwhat efficient at running their Economy, but not very efficient at running tech. So, I build my infrastructure to combat their weakness. The

First off, WOW, what a great game. I haven't been this excited with a game since MoO. Congrats. I can handle most everything in the game. But I agree that the spy stuff would be a nice tuneup on a release. I also think a redo on the starbase upgrade would be a nice improvement. Perhaps upgrade the starport with the ability to add modules to all starbases within a range and it would do it automatically through time. But the thing that I would appreciate the

I saw this post earlier and want to second it...for me, to hang on to the game and learn it, i started at a very easy setting...fool opponents and worked my way up. It got me learning the basics and what the improvements were and I was able to do entire games and win. Probably a hollow victory, but rather than winning, i was learning the game, all the way through. That was the value. And I would suggest to Mr. Burks that you learn it first then you work it.....knowning as much about it
