Correct: Cake and eating it too. I could just about hug you. Formis6: Thank you for a well formulated reply. I guess we could argue endlessly who has more right to be annoyed, hardware or software. 'forcing' users to upgrade a system" Admittedly, I wrote this with software upgrades in mind, but of co

Okay, just a quick report, as it's getting late and I want to call it a day early. Installed beta 5 test 2, fired up the game. No graphical glitches on the Arcean ship and an just incredible increase in FPS! Whatever you did, keep doing it! As for CTD issues, I need to play longer for that. So Friday the earliest. The system information part of the debug.err follows: Deb

I think it's 'safe' to assume that just about all of us are running on XP, at least, so I guess those unfortunate few might have to finally upgrade as some of us had to do throughout all of this, eh? No, it's not safe. And I have a perfectly shiny XP Pro CD lying around, I just don't see a single reason to install it over a perfectly running 2000 system. Rule number one of IT: Never change a running system. Especially not when it comes to MS operat

Don't copy code, but look at what functions are being used and what they are used for. Oh god, PLEASE, take that advice. I had to 'add' functionality to an already existing application lately, and it was clear that the original coder had just c&p'ed 75% of the code without thinking, while leaving the rest undocumented. Fun times, really... /sarcasm

No, I'd say 80$ sounds normal. GalCiv2 Import 50€ + DA 25€ actually would be about 100$. GalCiv2 German 20€ + DA 25€ totals about 60$. Or, my own variant: GalCiv2 German Collector 30€ + DA 25€ comes to 80$. Just as an example.

I'm quite content with "Resistance" so far. If we hadn't liked the name, we wouldn't have joined. Of course, my absolute preference would be "Spacefleet Gothic", given my main character. BTW: Let's go and try to get in the Top50, shall we? Shouldn't be too hard, weekend coming up, next two weeks all have holidays. Also, and I hope that's ok, if I loose a MV game after an afternoon of

Other than university with computer science, some easy things to do as personal project: - write an IRC client - write a jabber server - set up your own webserver with php / sql and host a couple of pages on it - write a mp3 streaming server in java (upnp) - write a tool to parse the galciv2 xml files using c# Personally, I would concentrate either on Java oder C#. I learned Java at university and am now working as C# developer. Both languages are similar enough

27 here. First personal computer: Schneider CPC with a wonderful green monochrome screen. First strategy game: If I only could remember... Among the oldest I remember really playing are Civilization, Master of Orion, Master of Magic and Panzer General.

I'd guess it's more likely legal issues rather than a 'decision'. Plus, European market means a lot of localised versions (German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian only to name the major ones I would expect), unless you only sell an English one which would mean a lot less copies sold.

It obviously doesn't affect the Metaverse. Still, I'd bet that I will forget to back them up in that directory, should I ever have to reinstall the game. So... *bump*

"My plans are always practical, it's just the laws of reality that get in my way." I think that under certain circumstances, and only then, it is useful to blockade off a single planet. Mind you, single planet. As I'm still down, playing on normal, I won't assume that I have expert knowledge of the strategies, but my approach to war is more Guderian style ("Nicht kleckern, klotzen!"), gather a mass of reasonably agile ships and steamroll over a chosen enemy sector. Then send in

Okay, so maybe not the German version. Still: http://www.okaysoft.de/ok/komplett.asp?TX=PCDETAIL&INR=110728&OBAUF=AUF GalCiv2 Gold, US import. Although I doubt they will ship it to a country other than Germany. Maybe Austria if you're lucky. Plus, it's 55 Euros plus 2.5 extra shipping due to legal restrictions (about 60 Euros all together, for comparison: about 75-80 USD). You're better off buying the regular (or collectors edition) GalCiv2 and then finding someone

Good idea. I read a bit about the alternative scoring system at AltMeta, and I'd be definitely be interested! The way I understand it, it scores a bit fairer for people who like to play larger games but take more time to complete them? Since I only have time during weekends, this would be perfect for me.

Great, starbase repair is in! Now it actually makes sense to build bases and have fast constructors ready for repair, instead of having to rebuild them. Will the fix for German version weapons-effects be in 1.6? (Wrong decimal separator)

In DL, I had the logos in /MyGames/GalCiv2/Logos and they showed up. Now, After installing DA, I moved them to /MyGames/GalCiv2DarkAvatar/Gfx/Logos expecting that to be correct after a few searches on the forum. However, they do not show up. Only moving them to /Galactic Civilizations 2/Gfx/Race enables them now. (That means the installation directory) Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug concerning my install of German base-game and English add-on? And if I co

What I'm missing so far: - Map editor - Space Monsters (either guarding planets / anomalies / asteroids or as events, heading towards a planet) - More diversity in the weapons tech tree. Branch each weapon into two: One small, low damage and one large, high damage. That would give more options in ship design. - Sliders for frequency of events / mega-events. - More points for designing custom races, or at least custom opponents. - Better balancing for 'good' choices.

I joined as well. Bought GalCiv2 last week, Dark Avatar yesterday. Finished a couple of casual games so far, one or two more and I will start submitting. However, I play for fun, not for maximising the score. Also, I get the feeling that I'll raise the age average a bit with my 27 years.

Just had my first look at Dark Avatar. Kudos to Stardock, full 6 mbit/s on the download, entering the payment info took longer than installing the expansion.

That would be ok, the English texts are available anyway. (For some reason, you can't switch languages, but you can copy the files ) The only drawback is that Metaverse games will have mixed language texts, but I can live with that. Thanks for the help!

Duh. *slaps forehead* Classic case of blindness. Thanks for pointing it out. Now, the big question: Will the download version be compatible with my German base game?
