You should have AT LEAST 10 extractors before you research the first tech your analysis declares absolutism. which, I told you, is a flawed analysis.
You missed the opening line:
If I had to take an educated guess at what point it is viable to start researching resource tech's
Still, 10 extractors is quite few, and since the tech applies to extractors I'll hold firm to at least ten. The numbers back it up. You are pissing in the w
we dont even have data from your supposed "tests", let alone understand their construction your right, there is a bunch of wind on this thread, because you are full of a lot of hot air, and no experience or support.
Whats all this about then?
jeez, just couldnt accept the olive branch.
This is my thread, this is my work, and I am contributing to the community. Apologize, tell me you were wrong, and I'll think about it. Hah!
under NO circumstances
I never said that. If you are in a corner of the galaxy where nobody will bother you go for it. But you will not be measurably ahead of anyone who researched it 15 minutes later, with the extractors to back it up, because they will start gaining profit at about the same time you do.
Actually, just to prove you wrong once more, I will show you how its done. Open the game data file RESEARCHSUBJECT_STRUCTUREWORK_RESOURCEEXTRACT0 You will see the rate for metal and crystal is set to 0.05 (5%) Change that 0.05 to 1 (100%) What is 100% of 0.5? Thats right 0.5... Start up a game and start up one crystal extractor. You will see your crystal jump one point for every four times your credits jump. What does that tell you?
By all means, provide some data that falsifies mine. If you want me to take you by the hand and show you how I counted the resources per tic, and looked at the rates in the game data files, you're shit out of luck.
It's 5%, no matter the game. You try to misinterpret things so that you have some ground to stand on. the benefit is the same, the return rate is dependant on your empire. You can take it or leave it, but the simple fact remains... well then, I guess we are in violent agreement. enough said.
The rate is 5%, and Ive been trying to poun
The return rate on these upgrades dont change from game to game yes it does, entirely dependant on your empire
It's 5%, no matter the game. You try to misinterpret things so that you have some ground to stand on.
mica, please calm down and try your best not to take shod seriously (i know itll be hard)
What makes you think I'm not calm? Im actually happy he thinks waiting for 10 extractors is absurd.
you should
What, for instance, is the return rate on another frigate?
The return rate on these upgrades dont change from game to game, so you can calculate their worth, and optimal time of upgrade. The return rate on a frig chages vastly from game to game. You could build a frig that sits in your grav well collecting solar radiation, or you could build a frig that tips an early battle in your favor, and you wind up with a key choke point in the system. As I said earlier, th
hint: use the black market, its vital early game.
Duh! What is your point?
in any case you still have different advice for the TEC: only buy the upgrade when they have ten+ planets, again thats a waste
You are making shit up now. I said no such thing. Quote me on that, please, I would love it if you did because it would show that you cant read!
What, for instance, is the return rate on another frigate?
Thes is where your better judgment comes in. Im simply showing you that you dont need to worry about it right away. One less thing to worry about early game, 600/50/100 more to spend on something that will help your current situation. That could be a frig, that could be a culture tech... who knows.
Invest in this upgrade whan you have more money then you know what to do with, or you have at least 10 resource asteroids, whichever comes first. Oh wait... You will ALWAYS have at least 10 resource asteroids before you have more money then you know what to do with. Schod, we are talking about 4 colonies here... not much at all. You simply must have the asteroids for the tech to be useful, and money should be spent very wisely in the opening minutes of a game. You cant win here
the person should get the research well before then if they can afford it.
Simply put, you can't afford it before then. I'm sorry Schod, fact is, if you research the tech before you have a homeworld and a minimum of 3 asteroid colonies, well then you dont have 10 resource asteroids, and you are pissing in the wind. 5% of zero is still zero. Get it yet? I dont care if you do. Research the damn thing as soon as the game starts, and take a 600/50/100 disadvantage for 30 minu
I'll have to try with firefox... It wont work for me...
in short, your analysis is nice and I personally appreciate it. but your advice is absurd: the minimalism of the investment and the grand nature of the return justify buying the research period, no matter how little it seems to return. now tehre are errors in your analysis, for instance you seem to miss that the vasar gain bonuses for all resources. thats an important feature.
My advice is to invest in the research using your better judgment and the rough calcula

Losing your cap early should be a crippling blow. Im fine with reducing the damage an early cap loss will cause, but notsomuch...
Notice anything about all the new faces around here as the release date gets closer? None of us have avatars! I have tried on 3 different computers with three different internet connections. From Stardock.com and from SOASE.com... 50x50 pixels, 30x30... It makes no difference. Avatars are a big deal...
I vote kosc for king of one line posts.
I do intend to plug in gamma numbers as soon as I can get them. It could change everything, but the qustion will still need to be answered in my mind. :D
I guess you would need to play a few multiplayer games to truly know the value of 600/50/100 (especially early game). Spending that too early on something that will not even start to materialize for 30 minutes, or on something that does not help your immediate situation can easily cost you the game. For example in many early games there is a battle over a prime chunk of rock between empires. owning this chunk of rock can be the difference between your opponent shutting down your early expansion
I dont see the option to pause the game in multiplayer as a problem as long as anyone can un-pause the game at any time. (Even the players who didnt pause it) If someone had to go to the bathroom they could pause the game and send a message to all: "I need to go to the bathroom, brb." People wouldnt mind that at all... If you wanted to make it spam proof, you could make it to where any given player could only pause the game once every 10 minutes. (There is always going to be that one guy who i l
I have edited my OP to include further analysis. I have calculated the approximate optimal time to begin resource upgrade research.
