I'm more of a proponent of the original idea of small neutral-ish power bases of different types that expand if not taken care of in early game, eg- dragon, necromancer, etc.

Only if people are living under a roc...oh..right. Heh, in all seriousness go play some Paradox game, Crusader Kings had nice lil family trees, though I think (And hope a lot) that E:WoM will be better, as it brings up all sorts of cool mod possibilites, and I like to Role Play my guy...even in single player..im crazy.

I think extra terrain, especially with the possibility of creating it all with magic, and how cool it would make the cloth map look, and strategy options..all equal = GOOD.
Quoting Bingjack, reply 3 Its really too early. I like a lot of the concepts and potential, but it's not really *likeable* as a playable game at this point. Which is precisely the way they said it would be. They were up front about this. Exactly. There is nothing likeable about the Beta (Other then the 8 bit intro joke). What we all love are the concepts and potential.
annoying things about games like these is the crucial land grab at the beginning. If you run into too many foes at the start, this will slow you down and possibly cost you the game. This leads to a frustrating restarts
Life, and games, can have high luck factors. As long as the code is right it shouldn't be too killable anyway, and if you get stuck with 5 dungeons near you...well, that's 5 chances of good loot to!
