I'm not the slightest worried about that. More possibilities here will only enrich the MP community and make it grow. We need to look at Civ 4 and 5 in these matters, and the choices you have there in the setups. Most of Firaxis' solutions will also be ideal for GalCiv3.
Except for the way they broke diplomacy with the AI in Civ 5's MP. That was terrible. Don't copy that. The key thing for
I'd spend hours watching hundreds of constructors inch across the map to the rally point and micro-managing updates to dozens of starbases. It was tedious for certain. I always wondered why in the GalCiv universe a construction ship was entirely consumed by the mere act of working on a starbase. You might think it would continue to exist, building the modules up over time.
Maybe the supplies on it are depleted or s
Quoting Gaunathor, reply 37 Well, they want to use the Steam Workshop, which requires Steamworks, if I'm not mistaken. Probably the same with multiplayer too. Note that Dragon Commander shows that you can have your cake (Steamworks) and eat it too (DRM free)
Yes, assuming that you don't mind losing the stuff Steamworks is providing. They didn't replace those features with a
Surprised? Why? Many of us have families, and we cannot really justify buying 2-5 copies of every game to play with our kids. It makes no sense. Steam has no effective 'family sharing' which makes it the most UNFRIENDLY platform in existence for gaming. We won't 'come around' eventually, as this hasn't changed in 10 years, and likely never will unless Steam changes policy and allows game sharing
Age of Wonders had a better hex implementation than Civ 5 did. The hexes were much smaller, cities took up multiple hexes, and you got a LOT more movement. So it can be done better, Civ 5 is just a bad example of a lot of things.
in my mind simultaneous turn respect totally the turn by turn mode : several players playing simultaneously could not interact in any way (on the map or on unique building...) the game calculate who can play simultaneously and organize each turn order to avoid problems
And how do you determine what "interacting" means? That's going to be confusing as hell for the people playing it, becaus
"Fast" multiplayer would almost need to be a seperate mode, because most of the stuff on that list would really irritate me when I'm trying to play coop multiplayer (not to mention that it doesn't line up with the single player game very well). So in "fast" competitive mode, you do stuff like this: 1. Advanced Start - Start off with a home planet more developed, getting you into the "doing stuff" Phase of the game a lot faster. 2. Turn time limit 3. Sma
The only 'semi-flaw' in that ointment is that the dev mentions they only spent $1000 on teh Linux build. Obviously if you have that low of an overhead to get onto Linux that's fine and all. However I would imagine that making a Mac/Linux version for GalCiv3 is going to cost significantly more than $1000. Which throws some of the math off in terms of the pay off in investement.
Far as I know, Defen
No, I think I'd rather go after the problem by going after the problem, instead of going on a roundabout thing that just makes scouting needlessly annoying.
This is not real life, it doesn't have to make complete sense if it is good for the game play. I don't understand how that per ship sensor limit is going to help any more than ship range limit, but the problem kinda exist in the GC2 and who knows about the GC3.
It does have to make some kind of sense, because having it work the way you describe is just going to leave a lot of people scratching their he

That's by choice of the developer. I just tried it with AI War. Kill Steam, launch AiWar.exe. AI War opened, Steam did not. With Steam shut off there's no overlay or Steam achievements of course, but the game runs just fine. Civ 5 probably won&#
I would have thought this obvious, but since nobody has pointed it out yet.... this is is a 4x strategy game with a pretty decent diplomacy setup (based on galciv2)..... couldn't you just form an alliance in game without having a specific coop mode? i personally find that more interesting since there is more trust required between allies than in a team setting where it is impossib
Agreed. I'm waiting to buy until I find out more about coop.
Do you agree?
Honestly? Not a lot. Making sure the micro isn't tedious is good, but I like building things on planets. Considering Galciv 2 had what was essentially totally micro free combat, having it somewhere else didn't bother me. I mean I wouldn't mind if planetary management is a bit faster, but I'd rather still have it than not have it.
+1. It seems like co-op would be built in via alliances. You can skype while playing too.
Yeah, exactly. :) That's kind of the beauty of it, is that it doesn't take a huge amount of extra work if you're already doing both diplomacy and multiplayer. Start up a sandbox game, let players start in an alliance (aka: start on a team), have allied victory, and you're pretty
I sure hope nobody complaining about Steam ever buys anything on their phone or tablet, because those app stores are far, FAR more restrictive than anything Steam is doing. Hell, the Mac app store won't even let people offer discount pricing on a new version to people who own the previous version. Why? Because Apple says so. Steam has been around a long time, and has given no indication that they're about to turn into a cartoon supervillan. All they've done is put

I'm just hoping it has coop play. That is the best form of multiplayer for a game like this, as it doesn't work against the single player part at all. Get a couple of friends, crank up the difficulty, and try to win. Competitive multiplayer isn't as well suited to the genre, and while some games have made it work, they're really doing it in a different modes or with special rules (along with really small maps). But guys - please, please please PL
Sweet! This is pretty exciting!
Well it is quite obvious that he is .. hm .. concerned (?) ... about how Multiplayer would influce his precious game. But as you said before, there really is no need to worry if it is just a casual "hot-seat" / "co-op vs AI" multiplayer. There would be no need to even touch single player for that.
Yeah, exactly. It's been done that way before, no reason it can't be done again. As for that other g
are we on this AGAIN? Pls NO MPer ever! don't ruin a great game with childish MPer elements. Last I checked it did alright. :P Also good to see people hurling insults against people for wanting to do something crazy like play coop.
How would multiplayer even work? This is a long, slow, and turn based game. I have never played Civ 5, so could someone detail how multiplayer could even be viable?
Civ 5 is a bad example, since they removed some stuff when you're playing in MP (like half the diplomacy). Civ 4 OTOH... it's basically exactly the same as playing single player, except you can have more humans. It
Lame. :( Hopefully they don't screw it up, but their track record is less than awesome and they have no experience in the genre.
I'm kind of concerned that so much has been promised that it's impossible to deliver. Hopefully I'm proven wrong.
