That little hit of resources, or trade agreement, etc. is helpful mid game. I find that early game I can't just go gallivanting into one AI's turf just to please another AI. Later in the game I'm just picking them off one at a time so diplomacy is moot. But midgame, where some extra resources means a few more ships, which means reinforcements for that fleet that's dead locked... it can be helpful. I never give up credits. Man, I miss the days when it was GeForce 2, GeForce 3... My computer has a GeForce FX5700, which is several generations older than yours, and I can play Sins. I think mine is technically lower than the minimum requirements. The only time I have any problems is when I try to zoom in on massive battles. I suggest downloading the demo first. If it runs the demo it will run the full game just fine.
