Laptops are fine for gaming, you've just got to be prepared to pay more for the same specs as a desktop. That'd be expected though, since you benefit from the mobility+reduced size of the laptop.
It's questionable whether this is a useful benefit to most PC gamers. If size and mobility aren't important to you, you'll do MUCH better with a desktop, period. Mad Cat

You can certainly use them for gaming, but they are VERY costly for that and still won't give you the performance that a cheaper desktop would. In practical terms, you CAN play games on them, just not very well (unless the games are much older) as they are not designed for that purpose. Mad Cat
CobraA1 . . . and guess what? Most people will do fine with the generic drivers, and really don't need to be constantly updating them. Only the serious gamer trying to squeeze the last bit of performance of out his system is going to care about getting the latest drivers from the video card manufacturer.
Until they run into a bug that makes the game practically unplayable. Then the tech support people start banging their heads against their desk when the player says
You are one seriously lazy shit if you pick a console over a PC because you might have to update a video card driver to play a new game. That's a brain dead simple operation that any idiot can do. I can understand the fear of learning the more difficult stuff, but anyone that wont do such simple maintenance is just lazy.
My estimate would be that the VAST majority of PC users haven't got a clue these drivers exist, let alone know they should update them every once in a w
Oh, those? Automated. They run while I'm at work. Same with my parents' computer.
You can automate updates of ATi drivers on XP or Vista? Mad Cat
Thanks for the info everyone. I've got a couple other questions: Regarding Artifacts, how often do you find them? Are they more frequent in larger maps than smaller ones, or is it only specific maps that have them? And is their location random or always on the same planet? My other question is about the AI. What's the difference between the different types of AI (Economist, Aggressor, etc)? Thanks again! Mad Cat
Maybe the reason why Hollywood sales are dropping, is because the movies that they're producing right now SUCK. Isn't that right Michael Bay?
Well, yes and no. Hollywood has been producing a lot of crap lately. However, if there are some movies that SHOULD be watched in the theatre, it's movies like Michael Bay's. Yes, I know, most of them are shallow pap, but they're supposed to be. They're not supposed to be deep and moving; you're supposed to go see them a
I got the game a couple of weeks ago and have been playing as TEC and I'm wondering just how useful some of the ships are. 1. For starters, I'm wondering just how useful some of the TEC Cruisers are. Is the Percheron Cruiser even remotely useful? I mean, you're only getting ONE squadron of strikecraft. Does the Hoshiko's repari ability work well enough to be able to keep your ships alive, or is it just cannon fodder for the enemy? Same question for the Cielo
CobraA1 With Crysis, yes, but I don't think the DirectX 10 cards are having as much troubles with BioShock or other DirectX 10 games - Crysis was essentially designed to push DirectX 10 to its limits. Other games should work better.
As far as I know, BioShock et al are all DirectX 9.0c games, NOT DirectX 10. Even Age of Conan currently only supports DX9.
CobraA1 Not very often. Every few months worst case, every few years best case. I do hap
CobraA1 Let's compare a GeForce 8600 GT (available for some Dell Inspirons) to the Xbox 360:
Ok, let me stop you here. This is a pointless exercise. Comparing how the two stack up against each other on paper may seem nice, but in PRACTICE, the 8600 will never give you the performance you need to compete with a console. End of.
CobraA1 Not to mention it's probably not that difficult to find a local computer geek to help you build a computer
I think the thing that bothers me most about this thread is the ennui being exhibited by 'teh hard kore gamz0rs' who think that if you don't know how to build a computer, from scratch, in less than sixty seconds with your penis tied behind your back, you don't deserve to be a gamer.
It's more like you don't deserve to complain about PC gaming. As I said before, PC gaming requires knowledge and dedication that isn't required of consoles; just maintaining your PC is a hob
I'm sick and mother f*ckin' tired of being chased by zombies. Screw that. I want to be the first zombie, out infecting the unsuspecting town.
Then you're going to love the aforementioned Left 4 Dead game. You can play as a zombie in co-op multiplayer. :D Mad Cat
CobraA1 I think they need to start requiring logic in high school.Well, what we are talking about here is highly situational: How much it costs to upgrade is largely going to depend on what you already have. Truth be known, this is a hard thing to generalize because it's a case by case basis. In addition, personal tastes also factor into the decision. I personally don't care about sound, so it's very unlikely I'll buy a sound card, even for gaming. So this is more a statistical argumen
mafutnyaos I havent even played 2142 yet, but BF2 alone has it's problems.
Very true, but I could at the very least run BF2 DECENTLY. Of course, BF2 had completely different set of problems with how weapon accuracy was designed which, when combined with the buggy online hit detection, just made the game infuriating after so many hours of gameplay. BF2142, however, was just so horrible that the beta / demo would only run on my X800XL vid card at 800x600. Me
The point I'm making is that including the monitor in the price for a computer but not including a TV for an Xbox is not a fair comparison.
But it IS a fair comparison; YOUR comparison is the one that is unfair. By your logic, we should NOT factor cost of the keyboard into the price of the PC because most standard console sets only come with ONE controller while the PC comes with TWO (mouse AND keyboard).
CobraA1 The power supply, like pretty mu
CobraA1 In which case, it's a completely unfair comparison - you're talking about making one system from scratch, as opposed to another system with already existing parts. Of course the system using already existing parts is going to be cheaper.
In THEORY, yes, but in practice, this argument simply doesn't hold up. I'd be surprised if less than 100% of people who own a console already didn't already own a TV when they bought a console. However, if you've never owne
Composed By the way CommanderMadCatI was just talking about an average computer user who mostly just surfs the internet and likes to play computer games every now and then. But even if they are computer gamers, not all of them know much about building their own computer or upgrading the parts.
I don't think this market exists anymore. Most of the people who fit this category either play silly casual "games" like Solitaire, or own a console to play games because they
It seems that a claim to fame for a computer game can be for its amazing grahpics. That is a good thing but I am starting to notice that with the better graphics comes at the cost of needing a better computer or graphics card. Its nice to reed the details off some cars bumber, but not if I am worries about my computer crashing. The reason I got Sins of a solar empire is because of how it does not need a ultra good computer for it to use. games that require high e
Oops, sorry; I got my numbers mixed up. The 9800GX2 would increase the cost by about $350, not $250, which would put the system up to a good $2000. But, again, judicious searching for prices and specials will easily get this system's price under $2000. Mad Cat
thank you for that completely unsubstantiated claim, despite the fact that new games run fine on it and will for the foreseeable future. it's not like there's a choice, anyway, the 8800GT/9600GT is the only decent option for price/performance.
Not only that, but the average price difference between a 9600GT and an 8800 GT is something like $25. If you want to buy a 9600GT, you might as well pony up that extra $25 and get a superior 8800GT. Mad Cat
Just curious what do you even define as a reasonable budget gaming computer?? Because i would say its less than 1k dollars. And i really doubt those would run games like assassins creed smoothly, not to mention some of the other games that are coming out later this year.
Just for kicks, I went to Newegg.com and browsed the prices of PC parts and came up with this generic list of usual costs (not average or cheapest, just ballpark figures for decent but not over-the-to
nequa how many games in the last year have had "high" graphics settings that put a toll on a reasonable or budget gaming computer (let's say, E6400 or higher processor, 9600GT)the trick is, don't say "Crysis"goa reasonable gaming computer will have to be replaced at least every 2 years (probably sooner) if you want to barely keep up with the newer games is the issue and most people find it to be a waste of money. I bought my computer in 2005 and i am not planning to replace it until 2010
I agree. I just wrote a articel about how graphics are getting to good for most peoples computers. But I would not worry to much. Hopefully the PC Games industry will relise what is happing and stop making graphics so damm good that I need the newest computer that cost 5,000 dollars. Sorry if my post sounds like it is just taking what you said and changing it a little.
Actually, my point is that you DON'T need a $5,000 to to play the latest games. In fact, you can do it
