Some of the other techs are disabled in the campaigns. I remember there is at least one scenario where only armour defences are available. Hover the cursor over the tech tree in the research screen, then you can zoom in and out on it, and move it around by holding down the mouse button. I had to get more GalCivII experience from sandbox games before I could get throught the Dread Lords campaign (without the luck of starting with large
And never give up.
Actually, I won this game (also had the plague megaevent later) finally. There were many close battles so it was a good game; my good economy allowed me to rush-buy many large-hulled ships on newly conquered planets. I usually only give up when my ships are being destroyed without enemy damage/losses. [quote who="Hig

Many games, some of the major races get wiped out before I have made first contact, and others won't ally even with "close" relations.
Does it take an extremely long time to get to this level?
Yes usually. Giving free gifts helps (even cheap stuff like "missile defence theory"), but you have to wait "a couple of months" until you can speak to them again. Trading helps. Even when the relations displays the max "++" ("trading++"), sending more freighters to them still improves relations. Some races like trading m

I never use those included ships. I don't always aquire technologies in the same order so it depends what I have, what the enemies might do, and how quickly I need ships built, whether I need sensors or life support or engines.

I'm in a bad situation (DA Metaverse game, I am considering retiring), but I have a strong ally and my enemy (Terrans) do not have the optimum ship defences, and my diplomacy is good, and my economy, but..., and..., .... I had to put my tax rate to zero after the disease megaevent, but some earlier events had increased trade incomes: <img src="http://home.btconnect.com/worldsonscreens/inlinks/ZeroTax.jpg" alt="Zero Tax
I always thought the Dread Lords are a joke when they appear in normal games.
So did I, but I'll be a little more careful now. Same with those other minor races that appear (Vegans, Paridians, etc.).

I grab that usual low PQ near the starting planet quickly so that my other colony ships (speed 1) can gain an extra 2 moves by landing on it then launching in the same turn.

I could've won this if I had earlier... That is, I made a wrong choice. In this MV DA game crippling difficulty gigantic galaxy: me (Altarian Resistance), Korath, and Terrans were remaining after starting with 9 races. I retired when Korath declared war on me (I am the light-blue line in the graphs). The Terrans and Korath were close relations to each other and the Terrans were neutral while I was evil - so ther

Have you looked in the "Bug Reports" forum for posts about GalCivII and Vista? There is at least one such thread in the "sticky" section.

The Altarians with the "Super Organizer" special ability increases the chances of races with similar ethics "rallying to your cause". I would expect some of them to declare war on the Terrans, so my answer is...no this is not normal. Perhaps they all had similar ethics to the Terrans. Read the reports on the races in the relations screen, they also show each race's ethical alignment.
During United Planets voting, do the other races "remember" if you cast a vote different than theirs?
I believe (can't be sure about this) that they do; other races have immediately had "we know what you're doing-" appear in their diplomacy, and relations generally worsening, after I have voted (especially after a "xxx race should distribute a percentage of their treasury

The Torians had that event more than once in my games, becoming evil. I hadn't noticed any details about their diplomacy etc. because the main effect was their declaring war on me easily, and other evil races tending to help them.
