You could always just play a gigantic abundant everything game on a high difficulty and let the game continue for a while. You will likely find it quite "hard" to finish the game, at least I have found it so in DA.

At this point in my game, I would be willing to turn down anything and everything to try to get it to a finish. I guess what I'll try next is exactly that. I have already zeroed the planet textrures and some display values. I think that tonight I will zero-out just about everything else that I can find on the set-up page. Absent that, can a Dev or Old Hand tell me what size galaxy I could finish a lonnng game in? Or, is it some number of players I have t
This is getting absurd. I have to save multiple times per turn now, and it's a near-miracle to advance a turn. Have players actually played deep into a gigantic everything-abundant game? All of the 9 major races are still there as are 2 of the minor races. The top several races have pretty much researched everything, and the factors on the ships are huge. Most of the mine resources are unmined now. I have two that I am still guarding hard with fleets
The AI may have Red bases with upgrades through modules, among other possibilities. One way to check is to click for details on the AI ships, count the weapons, add the attack factors, and compare the result with the "nameplate" value those weapons would sum to. If the reported value is higher than the "nameplate" value, then the AI has augmented the attack factors. Red bases are one way. Another source of upgrades comes from surveyed anomalies. Another way i
Okay - but do note that the symptoms seem to be similar. I am not a code guy though, so I do not know how one would determine if there was (or was not) such a bug. All I know is that I keep having these "out of memory" crashes on both my computers in different games when I finally get to the late mid-game with gigantic maxed-out galaxies. Last night, one major race surrendered to me (I was not at war with them) and the game crashed while trying to save.
Is it freezing, or is it crashing? I and some others are having the game crash while trying to save, with "out of memory" messages.
I'm beginning to wonder it the OOM crashes might be due to a "memory leak" or some such similar bug, perhaps inadvertently created by a patch. IIRC, Birth of the Federation suffered from a bug of that sort, as have a few other games. In BOTF, the memory leak bug would cripple or crash the game sometime around turn 150 on the greatest settings. With the much greater memory in today's machines (2 gig RAM versus some # meg in 1999), it might simply take longer
I also seem to have run into OOM crashes again. Turning down most of the non-ship textures to zip seems to have bought me a few dozen turns, but that's it. Nuts. I sure seem to recall reading folk tell of epic games on max settings. I have ships now with attack and defense factors over 300 and am in a position to really turn the corner in my first gigantic Suicidal game ... and may not be able to finish it. What game settings would let me complete a long DA g
346L3 - On your original Q post, you asked if factories were useless if all the improvement tiles had been used and no starport had been built. First, you can change/upgrade almost any improvement to another. The exceptions, IIRC, are a few that one cannot demolish.&nb
Well, in the case above, the two new reports (peace then war) were in the same turn report to the player. That is, I bribed for peace on Turn, say, 388. Then, at the start of turn 389, I was informed that the Korath had signed a peace treaty with the Yor and the very next report below it (also turn 389) was that the Korath had declared war on the Yor.
Players like to be presented with meaningful choices, make decisions, and SEE the effects of those choices. For example, I never bother to add extras to GCII ship hulls (other than to add needed hardpoints) because those choices have no meaning, no significance. In a first person shooter, choices of which weapon, which path, etc. all provide significant feedback. If one chooses the uber shotgun for close combat only to face an enemy in a long hall, ..
In my current DA game (gigantic, abundant, max players, suicidal), I gained an Alliance with the Yor while they were at war with the Korath (easily the strongest empire, but cash poor). I asked the Yor to make peace with Korath, and they said they'd love to, but that the Korath would not. So, I bribed the Korath to make peace, they took the bribe and agreed, made peace, and then declared war again in the same turn! That left me either declaring war on the

I had this problem in the stock DA game and Kryo suggested moving the slider for planet textures all the way to the right. I've had no more memory crashes since doing that.
The planet textures change seems to have done it! At least, I have been able to continue my game w/o additional crashes. BTW, I also disabled night lights on back of planets. Thanks for you help. I guess I'm just not "most people" - is TA more fun? I keep seeing posts for TA that some AIs are not expanding, not building improvements, etc. I have seen no such problems in DA.
They are simply glorious! I may have to figure out just how to do the download stuff, just to use them in my games!
Thank you. I will try that slider thing. Is this a common problem? How do other folk avoid this problem?
I like to play DA (2.01) on max settings (max opponents, max mninors, abundant everything). The last three times I have thought I would get a win on Suicidal, the game would crash on Out of Memory error a couple hundred turns into the game. I go back to the last valid save, and it would crash again in a turn or two, and maybe even on the very next turn if I tried to manually save. Would hitting quick save several times a turn help? I have a quad-core system with 2
Have you ever ordered an unarmed invasion transport to attempt to invade a planet that has an armed ship in orbit?
Yep! One cause of meteors breaking up is that they enter the atmosphere with a high, pre-fall velocity. Another cause is that they may be eccentric in shape. Also, some ablation is not that big a deal if one is not trying to preserve a landing body and also has no delicate cargo, like life forms, for example.
If you have patched up to the most recent version - 2.01, IIRC - there are 4-slot boxes for each race on the espionage page for "passive" spying. Spies in placed in those boxes gather racial intelligence and cannot be nullified.
"A couple of stones ...." You seem not to understand the math of KE strikes from orbit - we're talking multiple kilo-ton equivalent per rocky ore chunk, and there're lots of them up there. Any large ship designed to handle and manipluate asteroids for mining sure would seem to have all the necessary hardware, including computers and handling equipment, to plot courses and both carve and move asteroidal boulders. (How else could they mine them?) The transport - to lan
"(sigh)"?? I'm certainly willing to keep debating this! First, I saw equivalent calculations of impact location done on mid-1980s computers by college kids. Do you think that a civ with space-going ships able to go interplanetary or even inter-system won't have better computers? Canned programs? Second, the transports are carrying how many soldier? How many units? How many vehicles? Support? The number is pretty huge. Just how
The AIs build Influence bases in my games. One thing I have not yet seen an AI do is let their treasury go negative, yet I find a bit of deficit spending to be important in the late opening stages. I have had less luck getting the Major race AIs trade me good tech on good terms than you seem to have enjoyed, even when I have teh diplomatic advantage. I don't disagree with much else you posted, though, and I hope others weigh in. For that matter, you missed a few othe
It's a Class 40 planet in TA??? IIRC, it's just Class 14 in DA.
