What you're describing here is being caused by an annoying touchpad feature called "Edge Swipes" (not to be confused with "Hot Corners", which is an annoying built-in feature of Windows 8). It is enabled by default on most Windows 8 laptops that utilize a Synaptics touchpad. Here's a link that will show you how to disable the Edge Swipes feature: http://www.eightfo

Here's an image of the method for disabling Edge Swpes for a Synaptics touchpad. If your Settings don't look like this, then you may be using an older driver (or possibly a more generic driver from Lenovo) which doesn't let you access the Edge Swipe option. If necessary, you can download the latest driver from Synaptics here: http://www.synaptics.com/resources/drivers <img style="border

I'm guessing that you've got a Synaptics trackpad, which supports a feature called "Edge Swipes" under Windows 8. Access the Mouse settings via Control Panel and uncheck "Enable Edge Swipes". Problem solved - no more annoying Charms Bar. JohnB

In the meantime, a free third-party tool called OblyTile will let you do this: http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-pin-modern-metro-apps-to-the-taskbar/ The download link on that tutorial page is broken, but you can get it here: http://www.xdafileserver.nl/index.php?dir=Other/Oblytile

Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, View. Check "Hide protected operating sytem files (recommended)", Apply, OK. You may have to logoff or reboot for this to take effect. btw, this setting is nothing new in Windows 8 - it' been that way since XP.

Thank you, thank you a thousand times over. That was driving me nuts. It's a Synaptics touchpad, and by default the swipe-related features were enabled. Disabled the swipe features, problem solved. Please excuse my mistake. I'm a bit of a Win8 newbie.

Start8 is pretty great, but I'm having a slight problem. I've configured Start8 to disable everythng related to the Charms Bar, Hot Corners, etc. For no apparant reason, the Charms Bar will randomly pop out from the right side of the screen while I'm in the middle of something else (with my mouse nowhere near the right side of the screen). About half the time, it will then take me to the Metro screen and I have to use the Windows key to return to the Desktop UI. An

It was unclear from this article as to whether Start8 works with the Win8 RTM build: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9230024/Microsoft_blocks_Windows_8_Start_button_boot_to_desktop_hacks Any info?

I've had this same problem since the very first Fences beta and it's still happening in the latest version (I've posted about it before, but got no reponses): About half the time, I lose ALL <a class="iAs" style="border-bottom: 0.075em solid darkgreen ! important; font-weight: normal ! important; font-size: 100% ! important; text-decoration: underline ! important; padding-bottom: 1px ! important; color: darkgreen ! important;

I agree that it's a bit of a pain to have to install IE7... in order to install Impulse... in order to install the new Fences beta. As others have mentioned here, I just uninstalled IE7 & Impulse after the Fences installation was complete. Inconvenient, but not the end of the world. The new beta seems to work fine for me, just like the previous beta version. There is one glitch I noticed in the older beta version, though, and unfortunately it doesn't seem to have been fixed in the

Fences is fantastic - great concept, wonderfully executed. I like the simplicity of it all. I haven't had a chance to take a look under the hood yet, but is Fences actually a replacement shell? It seems like it must be - It seems to have actually given me about 100k more free memory! One bug report: dragging & dropping desktop icons will intermittently stop/start working. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. best, JohnB

Fences is pretty great - just what I was looking for to tame my insane desktop. One issue I've noticed: occasionally I lose drag-n-drop functions where I can't drag icons around the desktop, to the Recycle Bin, etc. When Fences makes up its mind to do this, I get the black-circle-with-slash-thru-it when attempting to drag. Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Always willing to beta test, too. JohnB ps: I've uploaded my debug file.
