@OP- the Toshiba Qosmio series should work quite well; it's got power, and the more affordable models are in the 1100-1300 USD range, IIRC. I personally am partial to the Satellite A660 series (also Toshiba), but that's more due to price and the fact that all the games I predict myself as purchasing are likely to be playable on the ATI Radeon Mobility HD5650.
