Hedgie, if you have Nvidia, i read updating to the latest drivers solve slowdowns. Civ IV was quite a resource hog too for what it offered, specially with RAM, but lowering settings helped me a lot playing it in my laptop. As much as i like them dropping GFWL, no longer retro-compatibility with DoW II and Chaos Rising is a bummer for me.
