As I remember te limit of children is 4. Maybe you have no gold when trying to speak with NPC?
There are city improvements (Agriculture etc) in Civ tech tree; there are Caravans that rises food production of the cities; there are spells that gives +food for cities.

I usually click on the icon on left-top corner that will select all units in the location. Don't work for units in the city. :(

When you have found shipwreck and have reported to 2nd city's sovereign, you're awarded by Pioneer who can establish a city for you. And no barriers in my version of campaings. Maybe its a bug of v1.01

In Combat screen not only camera is focused on my units and don't show opponents, but also NO options by the Esc key. At least list of keyboard shortcuts should be here. P.S.: alt-tab is working fine for me, I alt-tabbed dozens of times yesterday on v1.0
Hmm, I'm finished this without any caravans. When I had 25 Crystals the quests go further. I don't have Caravan in the Crystal city. Maybe you have crystal support in your units/kingdom?
