Good Morning! For the last 3 months skinners from around the globe have been uploading their best icons, skins and animated wallpapers to compete for the top honors in the Windows skinning world and for a pool of prizes that includes high-end ATI graphics cards, software from Corel, TechSmith and Stardock. Oh, and of course a Wacom Cintiq 12WX! We also have some cash to hand out to our best te

Without a doubt, my favorite events in the GUI Champs are the Icon events. The quality of work submitted every time is just phenomenal, and 2008 was no exception. The finalists for Most Original Icons were truly inspired. The winner in this event is probably the most creative icon set I’ve ever seen, period. They did a fantastic job and were recognized not only by the judge panel, bu

Another day, another set of winners to rattle off as the GUI Champs races to the finish line. The 2008 GUIC has seen some of the best icon sets out of all the previous competitions combined, and judging was extremely difficult. Once we labored over selection of the finalists, you folks showed up in droves to cast your ballots for what you thought were the most usable icon sets from the competition.</p

The 2008 GUI Championships is coming to a close with the voting for the Best Overall events happening right now, and the final winners to be announced this Friday (12/19) The top prize in this year's contest is the ultimate tool for the digital artist; the Wacom Cintiq 12WX. Wacom was extremely generous in donating one of these tablets as the top prize. As with the Radeon HD 4850, I'm going to take some time to show off the tablet, as well as share some impressions from me

Stardock's game betas have been for pre-orders only for as long as I can remember. The idea is simple: Those who have ordered the game have a vested interest in the game doing well and will provide better feedback than those who are just looking for a free game to try. Betas are not demos, they're not there to try before you buy. They are an opportunity for users to have input into the game they've purchased and be involved in making the game better.

Competition was tight, the votes coming in fast and furious and the outcome unclear right up until the end. But after making sure all the votes were on the up-and-up, we’re ready to announce the winners of Most Usable WindowBlinds skin for the 2008 GUI Championships. Based on the finalists selected by myself, Brad Wardell & Angela Marshall and voted on by our community of users, here are t

This is it folks, the last stage of user voting in the 2008 GUI Championships! Competition this year has been tough as we've seen some of the best icons in years, terrific WB skins and some great Dreams to boot! For the last few weeks you've been making your picks for the most usable & original icons, skins and animated wallpapers. Today you get to vote on the best overall entries in each

After a day or so delay, we're ready to get things going on user voting for Most Usable & Most Original WindowBlinds skins and Icon Packages. With so many skins and icons to review, it wasn't easy judging them. Icons especially. But after several grueling days of examining entries we have our set of finalists. We've activated the voting pages and added the judges votes and comments o

You know, all the griping about scores is almost irrelevant. Since between the three of us, we're being moderately consistent (we disagree on a few skins here or there), the best skins will float to the top, even if they only have a 7 for usability or something. The judging may be harsh, but it's consistently harsh. The judging is meant to result in a higher overall quality of finalists. In years past, we had the users vote to select finalists, and most voters j

Due to the larger than expected number of icon sets and wb skins in this year's contest, we need a little bit more time for our judging panel to review all of the entries and score them before picking the top-10 finalists. We want to make sure we give each skin and icon set the time and consideration it deserves. To that end, we are delaying user voting by one day. Instead of starting 12/9, we will open it up on 12/10 (probably mid-day). This will give all three judg

And yes, all three judges will define each skin slightly differently based on their personal views. That's why we have three of us, to find that averaged middle-ground. Also, when all three of us agree on a skin, then you know there's some definite truth to it.

Luna is used as a middle point. Skins which are more usable than Luna (of which there are many) get more than a 5. Skins which are less usable than Luna get less than a 5. It's an arbitrary middle point because we have to start somewhere, and it works better in this event if we're all using a common comparison. Luna for me is not usable, it's too big and bulky and gaudy. Classic is what I would consider a 10 on the usable scale in terms of Windows GUIs. C
