If at all possible can you start with a fresh OS install? It will take some time but install updates one at a time and test. Don't install any other software besides the OS.
This is a fresh install, only a few days old, the only software installed is Firefox, Thunderbird, and iTunes. I guess I will try your suggestion, maybe this weekend. I did set the paging file to 4 GB, but right now it's only using 1786 MB. <p

So what should I use? I want the lightest on resources free AV solution. I used AVG for years, it has become way to bloated. Avast is getting that way. By the way Doc - those instructions do not work to disable Javascript in Firefox 24. There is no option under content to disable anything. After a quick Google search it looks like Mozilla has removed the option to disable Javascript.

After uninstalling Avast, installing MSE, and a reboot, the system is using 51 processes. All I have open is IE. IE is using 314K of memory. MsMpEng is using 47K. One of the 12 svchost.exe processes is using 83K. Explorer is using 13K. Still slow as hell. Malewarebytes scan comes up clean. I would upgrade the CPU if I had the means. Maybe sometime around the holidays.

Well then what could be slowing down this machine? It has the AMD Atlon LE-1620 CPU running at 2.4 GHz, 2 GB of DDR2-800, and a 160 GB hard drive. It is running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 with all the updates. Every driver on the system is up to date. And it's so slow it can't handle playing back a song with WMP while cruising a website with IE. When you scroll the web page, the music skips. Could it be the AV program? I'm using Avast. I have everything turned off in MSCONFIG and I tu

Well OK. It's just funny that it is faster before updates. Why I help fix up these low end machines is beyond me. You would think a single core AMD Athlon 2.4 GHZ could handle an updated machine. Maybe it needs more RAM. It will have to wait.

So I have noticed that this computer I am fixing for a friend works better if I don't install any updates. So my question is do I really need to update the machine? As long as I use a good anti virus solution shouldn't I be OK?

OK, working on a family members computer here. It is a SFF eMachines model EL1210-09. It has a socket AM2 motherboard. The current CPU is single core, I was wanting to upgrade to dual core. The issue is it has to be 45W TDP or less. What CPU would you recommend?

Well it looks like we are going to sell the machine. Just to slow. Even after I reinstalled Windows 7, turned off everything that starts up at boot in MSCONFIG, went without a AV program, and no Windows 7 updates, and installed the lastest drivers, this machine is still having issues just reading the Facebook newsfeed. The whole system freezes just doing simple things. So it's on Craigslist. I hope Lonovo knows this system sucks. Hopefully I can get $225 out of it. Probably not. I doubt t
