Wallpaper is that clear space kept black to make keeping track of what few icons are there easier. I rarely see my desktop, so having a pretty wallpaper is of no value. On the other hand, I do have pretty pictures for when I want to see them. In theory any of them could be a wallpaper, but in practice that's not how I use them. They sit in their corner waiting for my viewing pleasure.

Sounds like the sounds got associated oddly. Try going into the control panel and seeing what sounds play what. Or look for whats in your startup folder, could be playing the audio clip on repeat.
