When I read reviews, I look for specific factual points the reviewers make, and then consider them from my perspective to help determine if I will like the game. For example, if I see several reviews that consistently tell me that the AI "assistants" in a game will routinely over-ride my decisions and won't allow me to turn them off, I KNOW that game will annoy me immensely and I will not personally have fun with it. On the other hand, when reviews tell me the graphics seem "dated", I

I would think the bonus pack would be relatively small download size unless they start addiing movies and stuff? Unless I'm wrong, it should not be much trouble patching in the bonus pack after you reinstall the program? At least I hope it's small cause I'm on dial-up. :P --Soulfire
The "Quick Game" has been a feature of at least the last two Civ games (maybe all 3 I don't remember if the first one had it or not) and it was always very handy. --Soulfire
1-2 week long games playing how many hours a day? :P
Unfortunately, it's always going to happen. Maybe some of them will get the game for free and like it well enough to buy it when otherwise they might not have...especially if the bonus content becomes significant. Or will they just be able to pirate the bonus content too? :( --Soulfire
I bet you never saw that senator successfully switch BACK to the original party after the house majority switched again. hehe
How many republicans have you seen that suddenly changed and became democrats when the democrats had a house majority? :P --Soulfire
Has anyone actually played all the way through a game that big yet? --Soulfire
Another roadblock to this idea is the fact that you can't do anything for only ONE civilization. Everything that exists is available for everyone to acquire with the single exception of alignment restrictions. To be honest, all I know about alignment restrictions is that you apparently can't RESEARCH a tech if you don't have the requisite alignment. Does the game also prevent you from trading for and/or stealing techs that are contrary to your alignment? Anybody know for sure? <b
Well I know damned well it's goona get a LOT more "playtesting" after I get MY grubby little hands on it! LOL --Soulfire
I've never been able to get into realtime strategy games. To me, "realtime strategy" is an oximoron, the strategy elements are generally "lite" and they lean more towards tactical than strategic. If I'm going to play a clickfest game, I'd rather just have one character/vehicle to control. When I think of a strategy game, I really just want to THINK and be able to do it totally at my own pace while I sip coffee, etc. --Soulfire
Send me your copy of the game and I'll get back to you just as soon as I figure it out! LOL --Soulfire
Thank you very much for the info. :)
How do you get to #galciv chat room?
When I say "consistent", I mean that technique X consistently produces Y advantage against one specific race (or less likely given the seperate AIs against more than one race). --Soulfire
I read that too. :) Call me a cynic, but I find it hard to believe no matter how great a job they did on the AI that people will not eventually find consistent exploits. I would be VERY happy to be proven wrong on this however, as the quality of the AI ultimately makes or breaks any single player strategy game. --Soulfire
I thought maybe it would be a good idea to start a special thread for players to start listing specific exploits that work agoint the various AIs? That way, since the developers seem to be planning to update the AI as part of their continued development of the game, they would have a consolidated source of ideas of AI related things that most need improving. I don't know if it will help or not, but I thought it was worth a try. :) --Soulfire
From everything I have read, it sounds like techs are available to everyone with only alignment restrictions. This seems to have been a decision made to keep the game very balanced. --Soulfire
"Thats pretty neat. Does the AI have access to all of the invasion tactics? If so, how does it deceide which to use, since there can be user-defined ones?" To my understanding a lot of the invasion tactics are made available when you acquire the relevant technologies. From everything I have read, the AI has access to every strategic option you do and vice versa. As for how the AI would decide which tactics to use, my guess is that it probably runs "simulations" of each
JavaScout posted a link to his web site which explains invasion tactics much better than my hack job above did! LOL http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/invtactics.htm
I don't remember the specific text of the dialog box I remember seeing about invasion tactics, but it was a multiple choice decision something like: 1) This option will destroy much of the resistance allowing you to capture the planet with fewer marines, but will also damage more infrastructure of the planet. 2) This middle option will do some damage to the planet's infrastructure but will require more marines to conquer the planet. 3) This option will not destroy any
I'm not sure of exactly which quote you are citing, but I understand where you are coming from. Honestly though, from what I have seen of Frogboy (and this company in general), they seem to try very hard to be honest and forthcoming. It's really not very easy to make every statement 100% accurate under every possible circumstance with no possible room for misinterpretation. Usually when we communicate, as much as we try to be clear, we assume to some degree that people understand wh
"As far as saving the templates, I think that is a great idea. Just have the template saved as the governor. Then you can 'call up' whichever governors you need for the type of situation you're in." Yes, that would rock. :) --Soulfire
I agree having maybe 8 would be better and would be happy if they increased the number, but I'm pretty sure I can live with 4. Maybe they just couldn't think up enough snappy names like Mr. Smith and Ms. Jones to have more than four? :D --Soulfire
From what I understand, you could pretty much add any of those things yourself as either random event or technology "mods"? Using your evil scientist example: Random event: A group of "ambitious" scientists approach you about funding a promising research project that will yield technology to significantly extend the lifespan of humans, but which regrettably requires the extensive use of human "subjects" to test and perfect the technology. Most of the test subjects wi
