I don't have the game ... but I wonder why everyone is wishing that the diplomacy was like Rome:Total War? I found that diplomacy model to be a train wreck. It sounded good on paper but the AI was so erratic that it was pretty much worthless. I agree that AI's should never get really offended if you turn down an exceptional request on their part. That is one of the things I hated about Civilization "Diplomacy". Hey I know we are allies, but you know those 30 turns you spent research

Hi There, Even though I generally hate RTS', the fact that the game seems to be a slower pace might mean I could enjoy this game. But one question I can't find an answer to is a decent description on how diplomacy works. Is it basically just enemy/ally, or is it more sophisticated than that? For example can I pay or give A something to attack B? Can I make demands, or give gifts? What about buying research/ships/resources/worlds? What about trading tech? The term 'diploma
Yes ... I am puzzled by this turn of events as well. They know this is the internet, right? There is ALWAYS a griefer in any group that will do whatever they are not supposed to, and if it wrecks havoc among innocent bystanders, so much the better. But I agree ... lets wait for an official response before we accuse Stardock of turning into EA Dano
Okay ... so maybe my idea for the Terror Stars is half baked. Anyway - I know we can make new tech trees. Does this also mean we can make new Planetary Wonders, Galactic Wonders and Trade Goods? Dan
But lets say you have 5 Terror Stars, and your Nemesis has 3. Because the Terror Stars move so fast you lose 14 stars to your enemy losing, say, 20. Sure you took out your enemy, but you are so weak now that you can't even afford maintaining the Terror Stars that you have. I just think Terror Stars should be ridiculously destructive, expensive, and hard to defend against. Even a smaller empire with a single Terror Star might give you pause, even if you have 10. Sure you will win, bu
I agree they are cool ... so it means I will build them once (when I have already won the game) and never again - which is unfortunate since I think there is a real game play opportunity here. As it stands the Terror Stars are too weak, too slow and too destructive to have any purpose. But why not make them into an analogue of OUR ultimate terror weapon, the Nuclear ICBM? They are incredibly destructive and very difficult to defend against. Why not give Terror Stars a VERY fast speed? Why m
Wow ... this expansion pack is a dream come true. I had a blast with the custom races in Dark Avatar, I am going to have even MORE fun making new techs and tech trees. One question about terror stars .... namely ... I don't get them. You need space superiority to use them (since they are so fragile), and if you have space superiority, why not just invade? Its probably cheaper, and you get new territory as well .... Dano
I am not sure why it was felt there was a need to change how tourism works. I thought that the economic crash during colonization was a GOOD thing - I mean wasn't the new planet environments introduced precisely to slow down the Colony Rush? Same thing with the economy crash. Furthermore, doesn't this just make larger empires that much more unassailable? On the other hand it is nice for influence to get some purpose (on larger maps its not that important). Here are some idea
But ... But that would mean I could design MILLIONS of custom races that have a distinct look and feel! And then of course there is the fascination with seeing how all these races will interact with one another ... Ye Gods ... this game is just going to keep getting more and more addicting!
Or you could allow it and invalidate games that do it to the metaverse. Frankly I never post my games to the metaverse. Dano
Iceciro - This is an excellent question. I heard you can set Custom Races to play with the new tech trees, but I gather what you are asking is whether we can break up all of these trees into the individual techs and then mix and max. That would be great - imagine how different all of the custom races would be then! Hopefully this wouldn't break the AI, and since the decision making part of the AI isn't scripted I would guess that it would be fine. Here is hoping Dano
Here are my 2 BC worth of ideas Peace Treaties Personally I think there should be a minimum number of turns that you can't go to war with someone after you sign a peace treaty. If you DO declare war before this time period is up I think your diplomacy rating should be pretty badly beaten. Resource Treaties Imagine if you could LOAN developed resources to other races? That would REALLY allow you to make a big contribution to someone elses war. You could loan them f
Personally I think sneak attacks are much too powerful. I always butcher my opponents with them, but am never on the receiving end. I think the key here is to allow sneak attacks but have it COST you something. The obvious cost is Diplomacy rating on everyone else in the game (hey ... word travels fast). But how would you define what constitutes a sneak attack? As a rough approximation I would say the following boolean yields an approximate answer 1) Is this ship a
Hi there ... I am really looking forward to this expansion. Here are my thoughts on Rights of Passage Rights of Passage The Rights of Passage sounds like a positive enhancement. I don't think Civilization's way it deals with Border's etc would really work with GalCiv 2 simply because its easy to have planets swallowed by culture without having them flip. Anyway, I think it would be more interesting if you could IGNORE this one movement limitation by declaring in the treaty screen
For those of you aching for Multiplayer in GalCiv 2 I don't think its going to happen. That's fine with me as I don't have enough time to coordinate something with someone else for days at a time. If you are aching for a space strategy game with multi-player have you guys heard of Sword of the Stars? I very much enjoy this game though its not to everyone's tastes. There is a demo out there so you can try before you buy. I think it might fill your hankering! Dan
Hey - where is everyone getting this coupon for 25% off??? Dano PS - Quake Wars, Hellgate London, NWN2:Mask of the Betrayer, Unreal 3, GalCiv2: Mask of the Betrayer *Whew* Its going to be a BUSY fall! And people same PC gaming is dying! Ha!
Terror Stars certainly sound interesting, and I remember playing with them in Gal Civ 1 - but honestly, besides there Coolness Factor - I never did understand their strategic significance. I am intrigued with the Ground Combat enhancement. Also, I hope we can assign these new custom techs to our brand new custom enemies. Dano
Bah ... I am sure I read a quote somewhere where Brad said he would be surprised if GalCiv 3 came out this side of the decade. Keep cranking out the expansions I say - Feed the masses! Gotta make hay while the sun is shining ... Dano
But if that was the case then why ever sue for peace? You might as well keep sacking planets and possibly get the techs that way. It still seems silly to prefer certain extermination rather than give away a single non-military tech. Oh ... and BTW THEY were the one's that started the war. Dano
Hi All, No I am not talking about tech trading, which admittedly was too easy to exploit. I have destroyed the Altarian Resistance and have sacked about 12 of their planets. They are down to about 4 planets and my forces are irresistable. We have never warred before and I have a considerable diplomatic advantage. I offer peace for a single tech of advanced colonization. They turn me down!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is CRAZY! They would rather be exterminated then gi
Now do you suffer a penalty if the treaty is coming from you or going to you? I thought you only suffered a penalty if you offered a treaty and then declared war. Dano
Here are my ideas 1) I make a lot of Custom Opponents, but the default music for all of them on the diplomacy screens are always the Terrans. This gets kind of tiring when you have the Evil Blargosplats and it plays the patriotic, happy music of the Terrans. When creating a Custom opponent you should be able to select which race's music is to play when interacting with that race (Dregin, Altarian etc.) 2) Wouldn't it be cool when you tell the computer to randomize your opponent
Try Super Diplomat, it is definitely the most powerful ability IMHO, especially with Galactic Bazaar and Diplomatic Translators - you can buy off most of your more warlike neighbours, and if someone is getting too powerful you can tie up multiple empires by getting them to war with each other. You might want to buy some economy ability when starting a game ... this can be pretty powerful. Although the colony rush can be expensive, you can stop some of the spurting by just squat
Brad said he is going to write some documentation explaining briefly the differences between the different AIs. I have tried to keep the aggressive personalities in line with Superwarrior, and the crafty ones in line with Super Diplomat and Manipulator, but I haven't really seen a trend. Again, even with Custom races my evil creations tend to get stomped, and the good races do very well due their tendency to hug each other and forge alliances. Of course I always try to make sure that there ar
Here is my 2 cents - I am relying on my GAL Civ 2 experience since I always use custom opponents in DA Superstars * Altarian * Arcrean Has a Shot * Thalan * Iconian * Torian Thanks for coming out * Terran * Drath Wet Noodle * Dregin * Yor * Korx I have noticed that generally the Evil races usually get gutted pretty quickly, usually becuase they just can't stand each other enough to form alliances.
