Leader, I think this is intentional. Brad mentioned in one of the early strategy articles that Minor Empires were intended for exploitation. The AI Empires will certainly take advantage of them, too. Not only do Minors only start with 100m and no fleet, they get a free (random) tech as well! The Minor will set its social production to begin producing any associated wonder or trade good, should that tech come with one. The AI's will almost immediately declare war on them and in

Thanks, guys. I've corrected my (previously DL'd) copy of Orbital Biospheres, and it now works correctly. JoB: Please keep us posted if/when you decide to re-do the Terrraforming mod. I too have had games where, stuck in a corner, the only way I could stay competitive was to colonize the PQ12-14's and push for this ability to (eventually) make them into productive planets. Kind of like being a settler in Aliens 2! ~SDC~

Peracles, Std TR's are available through Propulsion Theory --> Cold Fusion --> Impulse Drive. Combat TR's take BB Technology: Propulsion Theory -->Artificial Gravity; Defense Theory --> Deflectors --> Shields; and Weapons Theory --> Phasers --> Energy Channeling --> Interstellar Tactics. These are all pre-requisites to Battleships, and will allow you to research that tech when you have completed them. BB's are a very high-cost tech (2500 beakers), but they are a "new-g

It's a known issue. It was (iirc) posted as being resolved with 1.03. However, if you are playing a previous saved-game, new updates to GalCiv will not take effect. (Indeed, anomalies can occur, with completion times, etc., getting mis-calculated.) To benefit from the sequential builds, it is best to start a new game after update. Should you be in the middle of a game, simply complete it, post to the MV, then update on SDC. ~SDC~

Perhaps to alleviate the problem, instead of playing through complete games with each mod, Brad & SD could establish permissable parameters for player-created mods. I.e., all outcomes to an event must be within "plus or minus X" to a given stat in the game. (For example, +/- 1 to +/- 5 for courage). Any mod meeting this criteria would be acceptable; and mod exceeding it would require SD-certification to be acceptable for posting to the MV. ~SDC~

#5 George, I have found a significant, but subtle, aspect to alignments which the game does implement. Should your alignment deviate by more than 20 from an AI's rating (on a 0-99 scale, 0 being absolute evil & 99 being saintly), your diplomatic rating with an AI will begin to deteriorate. This deterioration will gain momentum ("speed up") both over time and the greater the differential between your 2 positions (ratings). The only counter to this deterioration is trad

Another good thing about wormholes... You apparently get sent only to another sector in your ship's range. So you don't have to worry about "doing a Voyager" and getting sent clear across the galaxy. Instead, you should end up somewhere in known space (or adjacent thereto). ~SDC~

Popup, Another good use for wormholes is to use them for deployment of USS Hero (and any other survey ships) to more useful sectors of the map once the current area has been completely explored and harvested. I will frequently leave wormholes untouched (writing their location down) until Hero has noting to do. Head to the nearest one and voila!, even though it's destination is random, Hero usually ends up in a far more profitable part of the map, saving mucho turns of travel.

#1 Force, Another thing I have noticed: The "research screen" (F5) needs to be toggled 2-3x between itself and the empire screen, F3) to correctly display the turns left to research completion. By doing this, I gain a far more accurate "estimate" of the amount of money needed to obtain my current tech "next turn", and thus can save a fair amount of cash by properly changing my expenditure sliders. ~SDC~

#1 Brian, I have noticed the same thing on my current game under 1.03 (Huge, Crippling, Loose Clusters), but have never had a CTD. Instead, turn-end calculations take an increasingly longer time to resolve. There's a parallel thread on this called "Performance Issue (Here's what I noticed)". Consensus is, GalCiv fragments its memory allocation after prolonged continuous play, and this can be corrected by exiting and rebooting. ~SDC~

#1 Straywolf, I believe $10 is a fair price for MOO3. Although it is a disappointing game as released, it is clear from QSI's postings on the Infogrames forum that the dev's intend to fix the game and correct as many of its shortcomings as possible in their upcoming patch (due next month). I bought MOO3 on initial release and, after trying to play, concluded it was simply unfinished. Too many processes were unintuitive and undocumented, and there was no valid mean

Ral, A big change to my starting strategy I have taken to doing is, only colonizing planets equal to or better than Earth. E.g., if Earth is PQ18 (my average start), I will only colonize another PQ18 or better. I will pass on PQ15's, 16's & 17's, simply noting their locations for future use. This has improved my early game tremendously. PQ17's and less are actually economy drags on Earth in the beginning; not having to decrease your taxes or spending to allow for their

Ralegh, Oscillation works very well in GalCiv and is, in fact, a key component I continually notice in the strategies employed by the more experienced players. On a Large/Gigantic map, Loose Clusters/Scattered and Uncommon planets, I usually set my initial spending to 100 and my starting sliders to 100/0/0 (or its variants: 0/100/0 or 0/0/100) and produce my first ship. I then switch sectors to obtain my first tech or social improvement. It all depends on my starting p

Rain, There is an option in the game setup screen called "GNN Report(s) over-rides Governor". If you have this enabled, anytime you discover a tech which unlocks a new social improvement, the Governors will automatically switch to it if it is considered better than their current assignment. I do not know the paradigm for this decision, as I never play with it "on". I believe you can disable (uncheck) it at any time in the game, though. One small consolation is, your pl

Za01, I recommend checking your options to see if you have GNN reports enabled. Generally, I find the list of completed items it presents at the start of every turn sufficient for this purpose; rarely do I finish more than 10 things at once. I too would like to see some type of in-game cinematic for a trade good (or other wonder, whether galactic or civ). However, I know how time-intensive such things are, and am happy with the ones the game and bonus pack already have. I found

#1, 21 Ichi: I agree, keeping up with the continuous improvements can be difficult. I, however, like them; they are clear evidence of the tremendous support Brad and Stardock are giving to this game. Remember, unlike most other development houses, GalCiv isn't even their main product line! My advice (and what I now do) is to update only periodically. Complete the current game you are playing, at whatever level and version, and post it to the MV. Then, check SDC and see

Ralegh, Also remember, to be truly effective, a strategy must be reliable under various starting conditions. Would your strategy work equally well on tight clusters as on scattered starmaps, or is it intended more for a particular type of map? Thx. ~SDC~

20 Replies 4,091 Views

#1 Ralegh, An interesting idea, but two weaknesses you will have to counter: (1) Stripping Earth can leave you without a sufficient production base to build many social improvements at all. Even though it is many player's preferred strategy to set this spending to zero at start, at some point one is going to want to produce soil enhancers, etc., and to research. (The most cost-effective building in the game, imho, is the Research Lab; for the cheapest structu

#1, #7 Vernmeister, Agreed. Very good points that you raise, and reasoned analysis. I do not look at the artist's "post-controversy" actions in these instances. As you state, the proper (i.e., logically consistent) position to take would be "I said what I said and I either: (a) stand by it, or (b) clearly retract it (and apologize if it was meanspirited or personally offensive to anyone)." This is what John Lennon did in the aftermath of his controversial com
