My guess is that the fallout from that has left some publishers/investors skittish. I think it is actually simpler than that. The game industry leans heavily towards guys who haven't a clue about girls.
I can say the same for my current department. We are so overstaffed it is ridiculous. We actually emply a senior network engineer to make sure that we correctly press two buttons each time we do a task. We have about 5 times the number of folks we actually need yet the budget will grow each year because each manager is only as important as the size of the department they manage. Surely you mean PC RPGs, and not Japanese console RPGs. Console RPG's from Japan suffer even more among non-gamer women due to the horrible storylines, stupifyingly dumb female characters, and often impenetrably detail oriented game mechanics. Classic RPG's are not real condusive to non-gamer couples playing them.

For the record though, I don't have a problem with individual parents weighing their options and making their choice for the most part (I draw the line as parents who won't allow medical treatment of acute diseases already contracted).
