Are there articles or something somewhere where Jon Shafer shares his thinking behind the design of Civ V? I've heard many reasons behind 1UPT and hexes, but I'm thinking in terms of modding. Well at least besides the mod where I gave myself access to Giant Death Robots in the ancient age. :) I won deity that way. Now I want to do a new civilzation, the Playhouse. Barney the Dinosaur is the leader.&n
because you're not experienced or intelligent enough to grasp the games fundamental flaws
First off, I am no longer a noob. I have beaten Immortal. Second, calling someone not intelligent enough to understand a game is openly insulting, and I'm going to ask nicely this once that you retract that.

Windows is not a given. You can install Linux on it for free. And from there you can do things like VMWare or wine to emulate Windows from Linux. You also have the option later to install them both and give yourself the choice at boot-up which you want to use (that's called grub). But this assumes you know what you are doing--you just may be a software guy rather than a hardware guy. The pros and cons of Linux vs. Windows are

Firaxis just announced their Civ V expansion's release date today. June 19, I believe. Diablo III is in mid-May, Civ V is in late June. It'll be interesting to see how it all times with Elemental:FE.

IMHO, the whole "you're a noob, so you're not qualified to speak to the game" is a cop-out, anyway. If someone said, "I have logged 600 hours on Steam playing Civ V, and I can say with authority that Civ V sucks," then what would people say? How much expertise do people tend to acquire in games they don't like?

ON A DIFFERENT SUBJECT, on a different subject.... Ever notice how Frogger could post a new thread about bricks, and it wouldn't be long before it's 84 posts long with the whole world's opinion about bricks?

I think the laws of physics favor a Space Elevator. If you think about it, it's amazing rocket propulsion can even take us to space in the first place. Newton's Third Law is relying on the rocket's exhaust to propel the rocket. The exhaust doesn't exactly have a lot of mass. Plus it's amazing you can afford to carry on the rocket what amounts to exhaust. It takes fuel, to propel all that fuel.... It's amazing the ro

Maybe their marketing people are operating off the same outdated information you are. It's MUCH more than 1% of the market who has dual monitors nowadays. Even higher, if games would be architected to take advantage of it. And sure it would impact sales: if you're the first to do it. That's always been true: the first to the dinner table, gets the lion's share of the food.

Multi-core games is a given now. What I can't understand is why nobody is designing games to run dual- and triple-monitor. Except maybe the shoot-em-ups, but even those just happen to run triple-monitor by coincidence--they're not designed that way. You have your top-level screen display right side, your detail screen left side. You click on a city, the city detail pops up on your left monitor, while your strategic map remains on the right. Th

Yeah, the QA guy. I've done software QA before and I'm here to tell you, that's a load of crap. Now *VIDEO GAME* QA, that's cool. Basically you get to play games all day and get paid for it. Doesn't take as much skill as other software QA, either. Culturally, the QA people are second-class to the developers, even though their job can require a more advanced skillset than development. It takes a lot of co

Impulse is doing Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 and all expansions for $7.50. And that's got good reviews. Then again, I got this same thing for $2 at a garage sale and have yet to open it. :) LOL.
Where in california are you going to be? If its in the bay area, maybe I can buy you a beer or something
Out of curiosity, how does it go the other way around? Say, if fans are in Detroit and want to drop in to SD? Is there a "the tour"? Blizzard's studios were awesome, but they wouldn't let in just anybody.

Yeah. So by inference, summer time tended to be when battles were fought. The Teutonic Knights were one of those in the back of my mind when I asked that. Heavily armored, strong--and marching in the sands around Judea. Really smart, guys. Guess those generals in their pretty uniforms and horse-drawn carriages never thought of that.

One thing I never understood about ancient battles that I think would hold only more true in a post-civ: make the summer heat your armor. At the Battle of Monmouth, more British and American soldiers were incapacitated from heat stroke than from bullets. And they weren't even wearing armor--that's just their uniforms. Why can't the officers not be morons: take off your bloody shirts and let your underwear be your uniform. I

Are you coming from, like, Dallas? That would make sense. My favorite part of SXSW is the film festival (that's just OT for this forum). It's a lot like Sundance. Lots of indy films, but the famous stars still show up. And after the film, the directors will step up on stage and take questions regarding how they filmed it--you're sitting among a bunch of other cinematographers, actors, pros and the like. I've watched Woody Harrels
Could you throw down some pros and cons on swords of Obsidian vs Swords of Steel?
Mostly just ease of manufacturing. Knowing where to look for obsidian in the ground and spotting it is pretty easy. Knowing where to get iron ore is hard. I'm sure in ancient civs iron ore just lay on the ground at places, but not now. And then as you know there's the smelting process. With obsidian, you take another rock and carve it. That simpl

Hi, I put online pictures from South by Southwest in Austin, TX. They have a video game show as part of it called Screenburn, which is free to the public. Pretty sweet stuff! http://jamestroberts.com/sxsw.php Oh, and I set it up so you can click on the pictures and they blow up, and I put on some captions in a little more detail what they are. Basically lots of video games (mostly shoot em ups), lo

I tend to think of it this way: have you ever had a disk crash on you, or you lost your USB stick, or some moron deleted all your critical files your entire project depended on? And you yelled and screamed and banged the computer, but in the end you just had to redo the entire project? But you get it done the second time around much faster, and it ends up being better than the first time around. In fact, it may be so much better than you look back and
