Researching lots of technologies boosts your score - more than you get for buying them of the AI. Building wonders and trade goods increases score. Playing bigger maps increases score. Winning quickly increases your score, but you tend to score more for having stuck around to research everything than for winning as soon as possible. ~SDC~
Evaluating the worth of a given tech is very hard work however.
I was thinking as a simplistic general rule, the smaller the empire, the less valuable the tech or trade good is. Something that gives +10 morale when you've got 30 planets improves morale for thirty times as many people as it will if you've only got one planet. Another AI trade problem: a race with one +68% influence base will happily sell it to you, even when it means certain assimilation for their
Only culture bases annoy AIs. You can even sneak a few culture boosters into a trade booster base without them noticing. ~SDC~ [Message Edited]

The Fraud “Thaurmeler!” swore Downie, in Elvish. “Rochwing!” he added. “The ring’s a fake? I thought you said you’d swapped a fake ring for the real one?” said Milady. “Apparently, I swapped a fake ring for another fake.” “And you didn’t check?” “No, I didn’t check. The fault is mine. Can we change the subject?” “Fine. What now? I thought our purpose in staying at Barad-Dur was to get the Crack of Doom reopened, destroy The Ring, and get out.” “It was?”<br
'It also seems wrong that minor races are willing to pay more cash for techs than majors, even though they have a much lower income.' I thought this was due to the higher diplomacy for majors as compared to minors.
I remember reading that in one of the versions, minors had been made more generous. This might have been through a diplomacy penalty. I do think there should be an upper limit to the diplomatic advantage you can have over anyone.
b) wi
No, ignore the above tactic. I tried it again and it stopped working after a while. The trade routes all went invalid. ~SDC~
I do this for fun rather than points.
Then you have no right to score more than me! ;) Dread Lord “Next! Ah, yes. Now, what’s your name?” “Shagrat,” said the orc. Downie snickered. He was wearing a helmet made from a troll’s skull. It was a good, scary helmet with the sole disadvantage that, if exposed to sunlight, it would turn to stone and pin his head to the floor. “I’m told that you questioned my right to rule. Well, I wo
One thing that might help would be if techs that lots of other races already have were valued at a lower rate (on the grounds that they could buy it from someone else instead). I'm often willing to pay quite a lot of money to buy a tech if I can then trade it to every other race in the game. It also seems wrong that minor races are willing to pay more cash for techs than majors, even though they have a much lower income. Another thing: at the moment you can keep receiving income from ext
Could you explain the anomalous more? Have you tried to resubmit? I have gotten two anomalous scores on un-modded games (well, except for the lower volume Drengin music) and both were "cured" by resubmission. How does one "overexploit" a minor? I must be guilty of that every day because I try to get every bc I can squeeze out of them. .I started a thread about anomalous scores but didn't get any great insight. Please explain more so we can avoid anomalous scores. Thank you.
<br
On the subject of trade ships, I've been attempting an interesting new strategy based around stopping the mini-freighter units from moving. My first plan was to gift a slowdown base to a minor race, and then declare war on them. It didn't work - they kept moving. But my next idea worked: What you do is build a bunch of freighters, and send them all from one of your planets to an alien world. Practically any world will do. When the mini-freighters are on their way back (so the income per turn
>:( Just submitted an unmodded Masochistic game and got anomalous difficulty. I think I must have overexploited the three minor races who were willing to pay cash for techs. I think I'll resume posting my stories here, since we still don't seem to have the website set up properly for it. Last Ditch “Here’s a funny thing,” said Gwainhar, as he rested after the long flight. “According to my father, when The Ring was first taken to Mount Doom and used to des
Sorry, should have put a ;) by my accusation of plagiarism. I wouldn't want you to think I was all >:( . I don't normally use :)s - there's always something about them that's not exactly :HOT: . Could always go back to putting all the relevant stories on a big page as before. ~SDC~
Theo - So you don't trade your good technologies to majors? No wonder you're having trouble at the higher difficulties. I'd happily sell battleship technology to someone I was at war with, rather than have them get it some other way that doesn't benefit me at all. The only time I don't trade a tech is when I'm worried it'll allow them to beat me to a wonder/TG. I think the reason for late game economy problems such as bpleshek's is the massive research bonus. It simply isn't possib
Same here, right click on the GalCiv Forum Button and click reset list.
Yay! It works! It doesn't answer my question about where I should continue the story. Theoden? ~SDC~
My Stardock Central thing is acting weird. It says this topic was last updated 4 days ago. Anyone else get that? It's not obvious to me when I'm missing things. Not sure I understand that new GC Fan Fiction site. I managed to log in but it thinks all Evil Ray stories are written by Theoden (plagiarist!) and it won't let me add my latest chapter. ~SDC~
You should get one of the original X-Box controllers, Gerakken. They were massive. Today's installment is a little shorter: Eagle Eyed It was a long and winding path, the path up the mountain-side, and narrow too. Wide enough only for a solitary man, or elf, or pony. They advanced in single file. Even in their warm clothes, they shivered in the chill mountain air. At last, they reached their goal. A few feet above them, set into a niche gouged into
You mean, there are people out there who don't experience terrible pains shooting up their arms every time they click the mouse? I use a wrist support and I still get them. Less so when I type, which is fortunate. It's not that hard to play GalCiv and to write copious quantities of prose. You just have to make room by ditching the less important things in life; TV, work, friends... ~SDC~
From the prolific pen of master storyteller Matthew Downie, the man who believes quality and quantity to be one and the same, comes the latest chapter in the Epic Tale of Downie, Poet of the Eastern Shores. Old Flame Mirkwood. The name promised gloom, and the forest delivered upon that word. The leaves formed a thick canopy above them that was glittering and green; but only from above. From below, only the shadows they cast were evident. In the time they had travelled, no
People going for maximum points tend to switch off Technological victory. ~SDC~
How would it be 'useful'? Assume the AI knows when to switch off its own thing - you would still be equally well off, relatively speaking, but with a lot of extra mouse-clicking to do every game. And in many ways it would be unrealistic. For example, the (admittedly overpriced) Planetary Defense structure, you would keep switched off all the time except when an invasion was likely. A shipyard only makes a difference on the turn you complete a military project, so you'd want to keep it switched o
I can usually play a whole game at any difficulty level without being attacked. It's just a question of knowing when to bribe them. ~SDC~
Admit it: it was my special recruitment song that won you over!
Well, I still dont see the point of empires
One good thing about being in an empire is that you don't feel so much of a sense of let down in the closing stages as you do in some civ-games, when your victory is inevitable. You know that your score will benefit the alliance. ~SDC~
