It's January 31st. In a few short hours, I will be able to reflect upon last month and realize all the resolutions that I had made a month ago were severely neglected. Ignored. Shunned. So, I don't know if there is actually any point in trying to hop on a wagon that left the area such a long time ago, but I feel that I should start making a few improvements in my life. After all June is only five months away. Huh? Yeah, I know. I don't know how shallow this is, but this year, I

I was in a hurry this evening. I've got a big night planned; babysitting my 3 year-old neice overnight. Now, my daughter and I aren't really the stay-at-home type. We are usually on the move; having breakfast at the local coffee shop, catching a movie, hanging out downtown. We buy groceries occasionally but are usually on the verge of running out of important items when we need them. So, instead of doing a leisurely grocery shopping spree, I sped to the local gas bar/convenience store. Fil

I hate phones, period. Cellphone or otherwise. I am the owner of a cellphone and up until last week, it was my only phone. Having a daughter, I did feel that it was necessary for her school to be able to reach me. As a student, I was never home, so it seemed to make sense. Now, however, I have a home telephone and got it because I was so sick of my battery dying on me, and of spending the time setting up the pay-as-you-go cards (calling the number, listening to their ads each time you wanted to

Where I am from, we classified as under-serviced as far as working doctors go. There are thousands without a family doctor, and it is downright dangerous. It's so true that emergency doctors often misdiagnose patients on account of not knowing the patients background. That relationship is so important. Having said that, my family doctor recently closed his private practice to become a hospitalist. The hours are different, the overhead costs are gone, but he also has a greater opportunity to take

I have to admit, I hate horror films. Having said that, I can't help but watch. I won't go so far as to see them in a theatre, simply because it would freak me out too much. Oddly enough though, I must rent something scary at least one a month on video. Even if it takes me days to get through it. (yeah, I constantly turn off the VCR/DVD. Pace around. Leave the house. But I always get back to it, once I've worked up my nerve.) One of the creepiest movies I've seen is Sleepaway Camp. (I didn't

i hate going out for dinner with a person who barely orders anything at all, and then end up letting them have 'just a little taste' of mine. Keep your hands off my grub!

I've been thinking lately about changes in my life that need to be made. I think about these things a lot, yet rarely do anything about it. Who knows, maybe telling someone else about what I would like to do will actually urge me to do more than just talk! -do the dishes every day, not just when we've run out of clean ones. It's the worst chore in the world. I keep an impeccable bathroom, manage to vacuum frequently, and keep a decent house, but I do slack with the dishes. -quit smoking.

It was the first thing that threw her off about him. She realized that everyone had their own idiosyncrasies, their own particular oddities. She tried hard to be non-judgmental. She was a pretty girl though, and she had dated a lot. Sometimes all it took was finding out that Chris saw nothing wrong in wearing white socks with sports sandals, that part of Mike’s library contained Star Wars novels and that Steve really enjoyed watching reruns of Saved By The Bell. She hated feeling s

For some time, he is not even a person, just a novelty. There is often a shuffling of position when word of his arrival is announced. Word gets around faster than he himself might, at least in a small town where social circles are limited. ‘New Guy’ is interchangeable with ‘New Girl’. Either way, it is ‘fresh meat’ for a rabid crowd. It becomes a predatory event: singles and the not-so-single start circling, planning their attack. The hunting grounds are traditionally situated in bars an

For a long time I always thought that I took after my dad. We're both pretty independent, practical and direct people. After having my daughter, though, I feel that I mirror a lot more of my mother's traits. We worry about things the same way. We have similar home lives. And, I pretty much raise my daughter the way that my mother raised me. Yes, my father did play a very active role in my upbringing, but since my mother was a stay-at-home Mom, we had more interaction. I find myself doing, saying

I remember the day. Oh, do I ever. I was probably about 7 months pregnant at the time; bitchy, big, and on the verge of being sick yet again. I suppose I was taking my uncomfortableness out on her and I was not very nice to be around, most likely. In fact, I must have been downright untolerable for her to have done it to me. To give me the curse. Yeah, you know it. That curse that accompanies parenthood that goes like this, "I hope that you have a kid who is just like you ." My dau

Earlier this week, I read and responded to JeremyG's Blog entitled Define Your Minority. This blog produced a great variety of comments and opinions regarding race, rights, history and self-identification. My comment happened to be directed towards Dan Kaschel's opinion concerning Aboriginal history and how their time is part of of past and not of our future. He spoke of how we were conquered and I claimed otherwise. I then pointed out how it might be good if he took a class, read a book, or che

Deep breath. Keep breathing. Okay. I started blogging because I thought it would be a good opportunity to read and write some reviews about movies, books, and theatre. I also was getting interested in the Internet itself, and in the communities that one can find and be a part of. One of the things I was leery of was getting too political. Having just graduated with honours in Native and Cultural Studies from a university in Canada, I had spent a lot of time debating, reading, writin

I hate to admit it, but I am spending extra time at my parents' place to watch the show. (I don't have TV at home). I can't help it. In some ways it's like watching an accident in slow motion.

I'm currently reading Phillip K. Dick's The World That Jones Made , and so far, so good. My concern at the moment is realizing how often his works of fiction tend to get made into movies, and if this one is optioned, that they'd better do a damned good job. It is a problem for some fans of certain authors whose books tend to get transferred into film. To date, I don't think that I've seen a movie based on a Stephen King book that I've liked better than the book. Stand By Me, bas

For the past couple of days, I've been using the University computer room to do my Internet stuff. Just happened to be here, and as I have an active account, what the hell. Oh really? I can't say that this is 100% true, but I feel like people are looking me up and down, and all because of another person beside me. Yeah, I brought my daughter to work today. Well, not work, actually, but they don't know that. The thing is, if I was actually doing homework, she would be here.

I must admit.. I am not a very sedate driver. Luckily, I think I keep it all on the inside of my car, instead of outside on the road. For instance, I do keep to the speed limit. After having being busted several times for high speeds I have seen the error of my ways. It's been years now since I've had a ticket, and that's a good thing. But since slowing down, I realize how damned fast everyone else is going. I'll catch up to them at the next red ligh

I'm not saying that Ben Affleck is the best actor in the world. Not at all. He's been in a handful of movies that I have seen, and while he hasn't stood out in any spectacular way, I have realized that he was there. I teared up in Pearl Harbour, but that's probably because of Josh, and bawled in Good Will Hunting because of Matt, but I wasn't even cheering because of Ben's heroics in Armegeddon, but because it was finally over. But nothing has been his fault or to his credit. No,my problem w

Hey. I completely understand what you are going through. I don't know if this is happening to me because I've had a child, but since then my memory is completely shot. I guess I'm too busy trying to remember when she's had her last dose of medicine, dental appointment, meal, etc., to remember anything else!

It's amazing how many times my 6 year old daughter 'needs' to go to McDonalds, too! I've stopped buying my own meal, however, knowing that her Happy Meal goes virtually uneaten before she's off to play in the PlayPit. It's all about the experience of McDonalds, nothing at all about the food. :)

Hey. Tough deal. My first instinct would be to let her figure everything out herself. It's her problem, and her decision about the relationship with your buddy. Nothing you say should influence her relationship; how they relate is the issue here, isn't it? If he could talk more to her, she'd appreciate him more? Let them work it out. My moral reasoning on this sort of thing is, until the relationship is completely dead (ie: no feelings on either side

It's amazing what relatives will tell you about the family history. My pappa, before he was committed, swore up and down that he worked for Al Capone running liquor. A lot of strange stories came out. He said he had some treasure buried somewhere on family land. He supported a second family in secret. (After he died, it was revealed that he had supported his sister and her child his whole life. My nan always wondered where the money went. She considere
