It was the slowness of the place that caused me to stop visiting about two years ago. I've been stopping in again recently but that place has a little too much attitude for my tastes. I'm mainly interested in their WB skins -- since to be honest, most of their "art" just sucks -- but almost everything there is either a clone of Vista or a clone of Mac. All in all, I think WinCust will remain my choice for skins.

I liked the Vista beta I had on this computer for a few days when they first made it available to the public but there were compatibility issues with some of my hardware which caused me to remove it. If that were fixed, I'd re-install today, but I'm the kind of person who knows my way around computers and isn't afraid to mess with something until it works. That is not what MS has in mind when they produce an OS. They believe -- and rightly so -- tha

My one word would be "unobtrusive." If it spins or flashes or wiggles about, drawing my attention from what I'm trying to do on the computer, forget it! Toned down colors and low contrast would fall into the same category. I realize that a lot of people like dark themes, but I do not. Transparency is nice to a degree, but not to the point where you can't tell which window is which. Finally, IMHO, simpler is generally better. The more complex some

Looks and works much better than Office 2003. For some reason, my wife's computer doesn't like Outlook and every time she sends or forwards an email, it jams up. I'm not having that problem on my computer, though. The interface is much simpler to use and attractive so I'll be at the front of the line to buy my copy when it becomes available.

IMHO, the biggest miss that we can blame MS for is the high memory requirement, which was over a gig most of the time for the brief time I had the OS installed on my computer. A more noticeable miss was the lack of driver support for the X-Fi soundcard I have which left my with something that sounded like it belonged on some ancient transistor radio from the 60s than a computer, and especially one which I'd upgraded the sound. I understand there's a

Things are getting weirder... I uninstalled WB and re-installed the non-beta .006 version. Everything loaded up fine. Did some other things on the computer to make sure that it remained stable, and it did. Swapped the skins around that came with the installation and no problem... Installed some skins from WC, loading them both directly from install and using the configuration utility. Again, things seemed okay. However, when I was using one particular

Thanks for the reply, Night Train. I had FX installed previously but have not installed it again since I reformatted and re-installed XP, so I'm sure that's not an issue for me this time. And let me say again that your skin is beautiful and I'd really like to use it. It's impossible for any program to work perfectly on every computer, and it seems that this time, the problem is with me since the vast majority of people are using your skin with no problems. Keep up the g

I recently reformatted and re-installed XP and downloaded the latest version of WB as a part of the process. I've noticed that now, whenever I download a new skin from this site and install it, it causes a very long pause during the installation, and then whatever windows or menus are opened at the time remain on the desktop until I reboot and then things seem okay. I mentioned last week, which was before my re-installation of XP, that after I installed the Undertow skin

The Vista beta expires on 1 July 06, not when Vista ships. I'm in no rush to download it. For starters, it said that you won't be able to install the final version as an upgrade to Beta 2, and even more importantly, my XP is nice and stable and I see little need to throw all that away just to be the first kid on the block with the new toy.

I downloaded WMP11 and you cannot delete Urge from your All Programs list, which is a major PITA for people like me who are obsessive about keeping the cr@p out of that list.

Every major upgrade I've done has been inspired by a game I wanted to play on my computer from GPL in 1997 to GTR a year or so ago. This last time, the game I wanted was $40 but the new components for the computer were about $600.

I have Defender, which works fine after the most recent update. Ditto with IE7. I beta'ed One Care and finally just gave up trying to make it work on my machine. It simply would not update no matter what I did and the backup program created a HUGE file on my backup HD that I could not delete without reformatting the whole disk. Normally -- in spite of all the whining -- MS makes pretty good stuff but One Care was a major disappointment for me so I'

Slashdot's got an excellent discussion of the mandatory-commercial story. In the end, it sort of comes down to a hardware/software issue. If your tv, remote, etc are hardware, then you buy 'em and use 'em as you see fit. But if what you're really buying is the programming, then there could be some sort of EULA which would require you to use the system in a presecribed manner, such as not being allowed to skip commercials. But as you said,

On March 13, 2001, WinCustomize was put up. I came on board just 27 days later and I still visit here several times a day. Congratulations to WC for five years and best wishes for many more to come.

I did restart the computer but when the loading completed, the taskbar disappeared. As for unloading it, without a taskbar or Object Bar, there was no way to unload it. It did work properly with one of the skins that came with the download, so you believe that the problem may have been the older downloaded skin rather than the program itself?

Wow. Installed OB and tried to download a couple skins. Something went amok and I lost Object Bar and taskbar. Had to do a system restore and something messed up my anti-virus. Seems that this program might not be ready for prime time quite yet...

I couldn't use it because it killed McAfee, but for it's own sake, it seemed pretty good. Nice, clean, intuitive UI, seemed much quicker than IE6 and on a par with Firefox. I'm sure that they'll work out the compatibility bugs, and when they do, it will give Firefox a run for the money with me.
