In a perfect world, those words would not need writing, but since this ain't such a place, thanks for doing so Usually when I think I'm in a perfect world, there aren't any other humans around. Nice to see you again—been awhile, hasn't it? -A.

I'm not blaming either of them for the death and destruction in this disaster. However, I am taking them and their Emergency Management offices to task for incomplete emergency protocols And there is a time and a place for evaluating those protocols, and it certainly needs to be done. Thanks

I am sick and tired of the fingerpointing following Hurricane Katrina. So allow me this brief moment to point out with my own ten hypocritical fingers some truths: You can't have it both ways. You can't have a democratic nation but expect the government to dole out Band-Aids in the form of money and supplies. Refresher course: We the people make up cities tha

Dear Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, I've seen your ads on TV and read the text of initiative I-336 that you would like to pass this fall in my state. I've read the tear-jerking stories of patients who are the victims of medical malpractice and how you've made their lives better by giving them millions of dollars, money that they would never have

Ruminations on what I saw in the grocery store today: Bad: I saw a lazy, obese woman push her calorie-laden cart to her trunk, unload her groceries, then push her cart behind the bumper of another car and drive away. Kicker: The cart return was just beyond the next car. Worse: I saw a low-income Hispanic mom with three kids going down the junk food a

I prefer editing to writing. One of the reasons for that is the relative transparency an editor has. Maybe not to the writer, but to readers. And it's not the editor who gets stomped publicly (well, not often) if the writing fails. I could deconstruct that, but...nah, I'm good. Good blog, Flooz. -A.

You're a Detroit fan? Hmm. Sucks to be you, but it's only preseason. You never know. Of course, you think your "tepid fan" criteria are complicated, you should see my own criteria for figuring out who I am going to cheer for in any given game in college football.... I think it is even more complicated than the BCS formul

So it's Monday Night Football, my favorite part of the week, and the Saints are playing the Lions. Frankly I couldn't care less about either team, but I'm not going to turn it off—I love football too much to commit that act of heresy. So I wonder: What's a tepid fan to do? I don't know what the rest of y'all do, but here's my method for cheering for teams: <

I enjoyed your musings which were particularly amusing and would have been even better with a helping of your pina colada! You're welcome to stop by any time for pina coladas. *sigh* I don't think this article was taken as tongue

So the world as we know it ends and I'm left to share the wealth of knowledge with the hordes. Oh what a sad day, &c., yes it's true. But anyway, there are a few useful things I could share: 1. How to make a perfect pina colada with just the right amount of rum. Mmm. Rum. 2. How to properly distinguish misplaced modifiers—and where you can stick them.<

Geez, Mugz, I go on vacation and miss the funniest blog of the month? Ya gotta time that better! As for ideas, well, I'm passive-aggressive and would just put something like "Yeah, I just caught you looking" so that they're all embarrassed when they make eye contact. Cheers. -A.

I also like red hair, but I generally think it looks better on other people. But having had nearly black hair all my life, red is definitely weird. Picture, hmm...I'll think about it but it might violate my take-no-picture-of-myself-and-put-it-on-the-Internet policy. Though I suppose I could take it from the back but that might be tricky, and last time I asked H to take a picture of the back of my hair (right before I cut it all off to donate

Damn it, with H gone this weekend on a boys-only camping trip*, got bored. Relief from boredom involved trip to store, chocolate followed by coffee followed by pina coladas with extra rum followed by hair dye and plastic gloves and bathroom mirror. Suffice it to say, the end result is, ah, hmm, well, it's red. Whereas formerly white towels are orangey-pink.

As someone who once switched guys in the middle of the date*, I apologize for females everywhere. -A. *Only I wasn't aware it was a date until afterward. Apparently going to the fair with a group of friends counts as a date if one asks you. Bah.

Outside our tiny apartment, the sun is inexorably browning our grass and boiling the asphalt. It's 105 dry degrees outside, and dusty—the combines are turning the fields back to dust in their metaphorical, cyclical patterns. Inside, the blinds are drawn and two fans are turning, somewhat lazily. It's cool and dark, and it smells like cool and dark in here. <

i'd like to bid for the right to produce and distribute 'mr muggaz goes to washington'. Now would that be rated "M" for "mature"? 'Cause you might get some Hillary C. on your ass if it isn't.... -A, who would definitely rent it.

Re: #1: Can I get bonus points for having once tried to aim? It...it didn't go well and I don't really want to talk about it, but can I have a bonus anyway? Re: Football:I should get like 200 since I'll watch a double-header AND still cook lunch (the pasta might get overdone if they don't call a timeout, but I have priorities). Now I realize that this is American football, so...sorry. I can explain the offsides rule in both games, though. <img

Hey BlueDev, I'm glad to hear from you again, but I wish the news were happier. I dunno what to say, maybe something along the lines of, hopefully she learned something from you guys that she can take with her, or re-learn, someday. Or maybe she just needs to know that there are quality people in the world. I don't know. Maybe. Hopefully. At any rate, I admire you and your family for opening your lives. RAB: Regulus Black? He seems the most obvious choice since he was "casually" mentioned twice in the book. However, Amelia Bones has the middle two initials, so it could be her if she has another first name.... I know what you mean about not rereading. Until these books, I was not a rereader. Now, sadly, I can admit that I've read the HP books about, uh, 15 times. Usually when there's a trip or if I have to be around my in-laws (who don't like

Today, I sat behind a desk for 11 hours. Today I made sure that serial commas were not used, that words were spelled correctly, that m-dashes were used instead of hyphens, that each story stressed the benefit to the reader (hey, I'm not in news and I'm allowed to edit). Today my boss bought us pizza for working overtime. Today I made $18 an hour—a career high for me—
