Cocaine was legal in the United States at one time, but the effects were disasterous, so it was made illegal. There are better ways of dealing with drug abuse than legalization of its use. Drug court keeps abusers out of prison. Giving treatment to whoever wanted it would lessen its abuse. Making something legal doesn't make it harmless. As for ephedra, which is an ingredient in a methampetamines, has been associated with many deaths.

I am sure there would be a market for a 1000 square foot house, but only condos and townhouses are built that size today. My son and daughter-in-law live simply with only one car but both of them work. The cost of housing is too high for one average income. I agree about materialism--but getting rid of all the televisions, dvd players, etc. would not allow a person to buy a house without a good income in a metropolitan area where most of the jobs are. I was stuck in Salem Oregon for a week because I took my daughter to school on Sunday. The roads were icy on Sunday, but fortunately there were no hill. Portland to Salem was dry. You have some good points, but you could make your argument more powerful with more comparisons to other countries. Scandinavia has few wealthy people because of high taxes. Although the court system isn't perfect, compared to Mexico, for instance, it is far less corrupt, etc.
