Moonclava, I could honestly care less about the fluff, but sphere of influence are not meant to represent borders, but rather real on the ground (or space) cultural influence. Presumably then something is going on in space that is abstracted mechanically. I think slowing ships down in other player's spheres of influence is the best nerf for the blitz. With the combat system change from 1.2, it doesn't really effect the A.I.'s strategy that much while making counter to the long

On suicidal, it will almost always be the case that your military rating (as oppossed to your actual military rating) will be lower than the ai. Being inferior miliatrily will prevent you from reaching 'close'.
Military superiority also plays a role.
I would ask how large your miliatry was relative to their's for starters.
It was an exploit because it was trivially easy to do and the a.i. wouldn't be able to counter it. Gallagher, why are you falling back on these fake symatic arguments when you (inadvertantly) stumbled into agree with me?
"Some Control" = "Request an alliance in diplo" or "I WIN" button. I.e. there was practically no real strategy in th earlier system. There is actually more now. And you are exagerrating the difficulty in forming alliances. And its not random. They now do what they should have always done: provide a way out of having to fight an
Gallagher That was a dumb post. Thanks for more or less reiterating the very point i was making. People are complaining that their exploits were nerfed, I was defending that, because i realize the ai has to use the features. You are obviously too dumb or bitter to have understood that.
I like the lessening ship speed in sphere of influence btw.
I always love it when people make the obvious argument that the A.I should be made to handle the mechanics. Unfortunatly, that is often not possible. And I doubt all the development time in the world would make the A.I. able to counter some of the cheese in earlier versions of the game. The improvements were good ones. They shifted the game in the direction of micro, which much more thought intensive than the powerful high level strategies which were supposedly broken by the latest patc
If alliances were so easy to get before, and required so little thought, and had such a huge benefit, what gameplay was taken away? All i saw before was an obvious tactic that was almost always worth doing. And under my two games with 1.31, it was fairly predictable if resource intensive to get the Alterians to ally with me. Good ethical picks, trade routes, constant bribes, etc. That last peace of the puzzle was when they went to war, putting their power rating below mine. That's when
Those strategies were broken and thus can hardly be called strategies. They didn't even involve any advanced micro. This is a single player game; if an ai can't counter a tactic, that automatically makes the game easier. As it is, those options aren't broken, as in removed now, they simply won't give you an easy win. If you set your own goals and limits, you can still use them, it will just be more difficult. In other words, the level of difficulty has been upped, and your number of opt
Yeah, they took a cheap exploit away from the gameplay. Alliances are one of those things that are an outright player advantage. Mechanically, all they do is ensure that another civ won't attack, but there is no such check on you. This means they should either be nerfed in ultimate effect, or, as this patch has done, make them costly and difficult to get. They were absurdly easy to get before 1.3, and the 'gameplay' you were referring to was nothing more than researching a lot of yellow techs +
gallagher. No, saying that stock markets are better than morale buildings is not vague. Implying though that fixing that one problem plus balancing the rest of the game plus designing a.i. that takes maximum advantage of all mechanics in the game and still expect the game to offer any options at all, which was the gist of your original foolish post, is dumb.
gallagher seems to be the type of moron who believes stating a vague problem as easily fixed will make it so.
Why is that a 'poor use of planet tiles'? From the AI's point of view, it is actually very smart, because it allows them to reach the threshhold where they can simply 'buy' ships at higher difficulty levels. Post beta, the AI is more challenging with its current build strategy than it was before.
Uh, no. You put a negative spin on good reviews by referring to it as 'hyped', by which you meant overhyped, and then implied that stardock was being irresponsible for referencing them on their site, thus contributing to said hype. And thus you seem to be blaming both reviewers and stardock for making the hardcore believe that the AI would provide a persistent challenge to them. Please, deny that was the point you were getting at. But I doubt there was any group think involved. The AI
Ray, you've gotta be kidding me. Most reviews have said the AI is good. That is for the general gaming audience and in relation to other games. That is not hype. If you are unable to put positive reviews in that context, then, well...I won't say it. But please interpret the reviews correctly before making an ass out of yourself wit
Of course Frogboy already noted that the AI isn't perfect and has done so consistently through his journals. Just because the OP pointed out the obvious doesn't mean he was treated unjustly by a response about his attitude. Further, what does 'over-hyped' mean as to the promotion of this game? All advertisements are aimed at the broadest audience of a product. I'm actually pretty sure given my experience that the AI in 1.0 was probably challenging to the great bulk of people who purch
Is it possible to outright replace the exististing political parties in a mod, or can you only add to the list (as implied by the need for a unique ID number)? Thanks.
ubertaco, i'm really curious.. is there a strategy game that hasn't lost its luster for you. One that doesn't have exploits, and gives up a better challenge without cheating? Don't worry, I won't spend my time knocking down whatever game you name (though I'm sure i could easily). This is more rhetorical. And the following isn't directed at in in particular... Some people have expectations that are simply way too high to be realistic. Namely that there must be a single playe
And with that last attempt to duck the argument, I believe any sane observer can conclude who is the victor.
FACT: You must be a moron, or else you might have been able to read the disclaimers i put in most of my posts that the issues you raised were valid, but your delivery and suggestions were crap. Given that you've just conceded AGAIN that you were full of shit, I believe I have won the argument. The fact that you even admitted to having violent inclinations also more or less makes the moron case for me; oh, and the internet stalking, which besides being pathetic on the substance (you've already co
DW, his 'ignorance' came in the form of the personal insinuations he made about the designers' incompetence, which continued after his ideas were shot down. He himself admitted to his 'frustration', i.e. his moronic jibes. And, if you actually read the entire thread, this would be obvious. He made this personal first. I and one other tried to explain what was wrong with his attitude and to reiterate the difficulty with making the A.I. do what it was going to do. He lashed out. Can you
Precursor, is this your way to try to retreat from a fight? You just more or less conceded to acting like an ass, but are lashing out against one of the ones who called you on it. You haven't destroyed my cred at all. In fact, you come off as sort of defensive. You haven't even bothered to debate the point.
DW, no one was questioning that the AI has weaknesses (though this is hardly an orginial point), but merely all the extra crud that was attached to it (lame suggestion, general aura of ignorance).
