Windows Video Maker HELP

Whenever I try to add effects or transitions to my video, it just crashes. By that I mean that the program just shuts down. There isn't any error pop up thing or anything. It just shuts down. The moment I click on the transitions/effects it shuts down. I really need to make this video and I need to fix it as soon as possible. Does anyone know the problem?

Thank you. EDIT: Problem Solved. Thank you everybody!!

My guess would be a faulty install? I was using the program this morning to create a video for my girlfriend, and experienced no problems. You could always try reinstalling (if thats possible... it came with my windows, so I'm not sure if it can be downloaded). Its possible that the transistions folder may have gotten corrupt.

If that doesn't work, I can't help you . If you have a friend, or second computer with the program, you could always do that. It sounds urgent.

Good luck .

Thank you.
Yes, it came with my windows... is there a way to reinstall the program?

It isn't in Windows components install so you can't just remove it and reinstall it. I used it to make my first video but soon learned that the rendering capabilities are pretty crappy. It takes a good bit of horsepower to run video apps. What kind of computer do you have?

I have Windows XP. Wait so that means you use some other program than Windows Video Maker? If so could you tell me the name?
Also how do I disable codecs?

broadway-dude...yes, Movie Maker comes packaged with XP, but MS has updated it a couple of times since it's initial release. It is now up to version 3, is far more efficient and can be downloaded from the MS site for free. Before installing it, you might want to save your work, then clean out the program folders/caches, etc to avoid possible corruptions/conflicts.

Best of luck with it.

It is now up to version 3

I can only find v2.1 (by searching Microsoft.com), what other Microsoft site might you be referring to?

It's not included with Windows updates, but you can get it via the link Island Dog so kindly provided above.

I can only find v2.1

Sorry, my mistake! I read somewhere it was the third major release of Movie Maker, assumed it was version 3...obviously not.

That's right...read about in a PC magazine that provides it on a free disk.

Thank you everybody but I have a question about downloading the program.

here it says
Movie Maker 2.1 is available for download with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). You can download SP2, Movie Maker 2.1, and all future critical updates automatically by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP.

You can also download SP2 and Movie Maker 2.1 from Microsoft Update. If you cannot use Automatic Updates or download SP2 via Windows Update, order a CD.

What am I exactly suppose to do?

I'd just download it through Windows Update.

But I can't download it through Windows UPdate.... Ah I have so many problems...

The biggest and only problem I have ever had with that program is the virtual memory on my PC, which while running the program has caused a few crashes, depending on the video size and how many effects or how much of the effects I was trying to apply. Since upgrading to 512MB, that has stopped. I know you can increase the virtual memory, but there a re a LOT of opinions on how much , and if you should at all.

Ok.  I was just reading about it.  Do you have SP2 installed?

You're welcome.  I noticed that Windows Movie Maker 2.1 will only work with SP2.
