What kind of custom file icons, would you like to see in an IconPackage?

Lots and lots of icons...

Hi all

I was wondering what kind of file types you would like to see in an IconPackage.

I have a list here with me, but I bet you can add some more. I think it would be good as a guideline, when someone makes a pack.

And I'm sure there's a bunch missing from my list. I could imagine some file types for various graphic applications, office applications and for files used if you're a web developer/designer.

I'm looking for overall general used icons, not icons for some application only a small percentage use on a daily base. Though some of those on my list probably are, but they're suited to my needs, and a reason why we're doing this (skinning), is to please ourself too...

I'll probably end up adding files like .dwg, .dxf and .psp to my list. What I would also like, is screenshots of existing icons for the file types you end up listing here, and preferably also the main icon for the application. (Like to those 3 mentioned above...) Then there's something to work with.

So please, tell me what file types are missing here, and provide some information to why I should add the file types suggested by you.

And here's my list:

I just took a look around and I see .dat and .htm are still Windows icons. If that's any help.

I'll try and see if I can change those in IP. Thanks Monty.

how about .cdr

That's the file type for CorelDraw graphics...

Please consider adding *.xaml files to that list.
Here's what the default icons look like:

Added those two. Are there any other Corel Draw file types, I should know about, RPGFX?

.m4a
It is a media file and the icon really depends on what the current associated program is (default is the WMP icon on a piece of paper).

Thats the only one I can think of right now .
.m4a is added. Also .raw.

Come on guys, name some more files for me. This is your chance to influence at least one of the skinners around here.

And could someone provide some images of file types for Corel applications?

I don't use any Corel Apps, so I can't help there but here are some more file types I use, and I think are sort of common:

.torrent
I'm thinking something along the lines of a wave (sort of universal) on the paper background.
.ape
Also known as Monkey Audio. So perhaps something to do with a monkey :S?
.cfg
Just your standard configuration file. Normally its just a text document icon.
.css
Also normally just a text icon.
.dat
This file (on my computer anyway) is the default "no icon" icon lol. It opens fine in a text editor.

.dat is already on the list, can't believe I forgot about .css though. I'll have a look on the others.

Thanks Keikonom.

Well, i have some suggestions, but they're not strictly "file types".

Im always in need of some good;

1. Music Video folders/ icons
2. (erhhmm) Porn folder/ icons
3. TV series folder/ icons
4. Torrent folder/ icons

just my 2 cents...............

I think your needs would go under custom icons. I'm looking for icons that IconPackager can apply on the system.

Hey PixelPirate, may I suggest although they are not file types, icons for Firefox, Maxthon and Opera. As long as they are in package I/we could after download assign them to quick launch. Seeing the nice IE icon that all packages have makes the defaults of the others look even worse than they may really be.
Just a thought.

I've been thinking about that, Cavan. I think it would be a good idea to have icons for various programs in QuickLaunch in a package. And it would probably be a good idea to include both png and ico for application icons, so people can use it for whatever they like.

.dwg = AutoCAD Drawing File
.dxf = AutoCAD Drawing Exchange File
.lsp = AutoCAD Lisp File

.pspimage = Paint Shop Pro File
.pspbrush = Paint Shop Pro Brush File
.psptube = Paint Shop Pro Picture Tube File

Thanks Lantec, any chance that you can provide screenshots of those file types for me?

Thanks Robynjh.

Paint Shop Pro's Icons
Thanks guys - now which icons match .pspimage = Paint Shop Pro File, .pspbrush = Paint Shop Pro Brush File, .psptube = Paint Shop Pro Picture Tube File, as you wrote above?

I guess the file with the two pictures over it (paint shop pro doc), is the standard .pspimage icon. What are the others?

I thought I'd get a lot of response to this thread.

This is your chance to actual get what you want in an IP some day.

I can reveal that there is a pack, that currently contains 185 unique icons for both system and file icons. I want to put as many custom file icons in it as possible.

So please, list some file types for me. What about MS Office apps? InfoPath or any of the other apps, what files do you use with those. What about OpenOffice? What if you're a web developer or a developer, what file types do you use regularly?

Please provide fileextension and a screenshot of the files. And please, could someone provide screenshots of Corel Draw file types and those for Paint Shop Pro?

Here's what I've added to the list, since I started this thread:

.ape
.bfc
.cdr
.cfg
.css
.dat
.dwf
.dwg
.dxf
.ixtheme
.lsp
.m4a
.psp
.pspbrush
.pspimage
.psptube
.raw
.tmp
.torrent
.xaml

now which icons match .pspimage = Paint Shop Pro File, .pspbrush = Paint Shop Pro Brush File, .psptube = Paint Shop Pro Picture Tube File, as you wrote above?

Sorry about that...middle icon is the .pspimage (main document for PSP)
The last one is generic for both .pspbrush & .psptube

The first one just happened to be in the pic it's a .jbf file (saves thumbnails of the .pspimage for explorer)

.m2v

M2V is an MPEG-2 Packetized Elementary Stream. It contains only video related data.

M2V files are normally destined to be multiplexed (muxed), which is the process of adding audio data and perhaps other streams such as subtitles, before use. M2Vs are created by demultiplexing an existing MPEG-2, or by converting another video format to MPEG-2.

When coverting avi to dvd with programs like TMPGenc XPress they are firstly coverted into .m2v and .wav so you can use dvd authoring software to create your dvd

I'm up to a total of 196 icons, including some icons for QuickLaunch. Could be fun to reach those 200, so please guys. Just 4 more.
I got two more for ya Lasse... I personally don't really use these but they are for programs that are very common.

.est For Microsoft Street and Trip
.wpd For Word Perfect

Alright, I reached the 200, which makes me satisfied.

I'll leave the thread for now, and let the pack contain those 200 I have now.

Thanks for your help guys.
