couple gameplay q's

long-time lurker, first time poster. This game has me very excited, it looks like the tbs game I've been looking for for some time. I've got a couple starbase questions, forgive me if they've been addressed elsewhere.
Do defensive bonuses that apply to 'ships in the sector' apply to the starbase itself, another SB in the sector, a Terror Star? (don't think so, but curious) Are starbase bonuses cumulative, i.e. two SB's with trade enhancing modules = double the bonus? (also don't think so, but not sure)
Thanks for your consideration, again this game looks excellent from where I'm sitting.

From my experience with the Beta, all starbase improvements are cumulative (although there is a cap for each planet), and will affect ALL ships in the sector, including starbases. Pay close attention though to the Starbase modules for defense, as some will add to all ships in the sector, and some only to that particular starbase's defense. I have not played a version with ship defense enhancing midules, but I am basing my statements on the fact that in the beta the repair module influenced the starbase's repair rate as well as other ships in the sector.

Defense modules all improve only the Starbase's defense, AFAIK. All other starbase modules affect all applicable ships/planets in the sector (or the entire galaxy, in the case of resource mining modules), including the mentioned repair module.

The bonus pack introduces upgrade modules that boost the defense points of ships in the sector.

From what I remember the production and othe rbonuses don't add up with multiple SB's...

thanks for the comments guys, although the answer still seems a little muddled. ;) could anyone comment on whether or not it's even practical from an available resources standpoint to build and enhance more then one starbase focused on the same modules in a given sector?

Building additional starbases in a sector DEFINITELY increases the production bonuses in a sector. There is a cap based on the planet size (I think) that will prevent too much of a bonus. I find that three loaded starbases provide a tremendous boost to your main sectors. More than that greatly diminished your ROI.

I'm pretty sure that military enhancements will work the same way, but I am only 90% sure of that.

The reason for the muddledness of the answers seems to be that some of the answers are based on experience with the beta levels, some on the gamma levels, and some on the release levels with the bonus pack (still in flux because of testing and fixes). So let me try to start over with your original post and try again.

Your first question seems to be where defense upgrades apply. While the beta, gamma, and release levels only had upgrades that applied to the star base itself, the bonus pack has a star base upgrade that applies to all ships in the sector. Since a star base is a ship in the broadest classification within the game, I think it is safe to assume that includes the star base itself. Also, a terror star is an upgraded star base, so I would include them in that class.

Your second question: Are star base bonuses cumulative? There was a set of beta levels when they were not. This seems to have been a bug that got fixed. All star base bonuses that apply to the sector are cumulative. Production bonuses of all star bases in a sector add to the production capability of all colonies in the sector (with a cap, as described by Brad in the Galciv encyclopedia site). Trade bonuses of all star bases in a sector apply cumulatively to all trade ships currently in the sector (I have not heard of any caps on this thus far). Attack bonuses are cumulative from all star bases in a sector and apply to all ships in that sector. etc. etc. etc..

Also, at one point early in the Beta (perhaps when star bases were first introduced), I remember (perhaps incorrectly) the descriptions of some of the star base defensive upgrades having text that the upgrade applied to ships as well. I just checked the definitions and it looks like that text is currently correct.

As you can see, sometimes us testers get a bit confused. I am sure once we all have our own copies of the game, this muddled state will clear up.

Yep, we have to wait for the final release to draw conclusions, everything else is only speculations. And since we are ONLY three days away from the great moment....

Thanks again everyone, especially Lucky Jack for the more 'final' answers. Hope I didn't sound critical with my 'muddled' comment, frankly I'm happy with any scraps of info tossed my way. ;) With reference to David's comments about 3 production focused SB's really gettin it done in a main sector: do you all find it best to build single-purpose SB's or is some diversification wise? That is, do you add defense modules to all your SB's to keep them from getting sucker punched? Trade and production all in one SB in a well-traveled and also productive sector? Or do you find yourself building SB's strictly devoted to each enhancement type?

I am glad I was able to help. Being confused (or muddled) is no fun. Many of us testers (who all bought the game some time ago to get the privilage) have been in similar states of confusion. The best thing to do about it is to ask.

Enjoy the game.
