I've sucsessfuly removed Icon tiltes from icons on desktop ( Rename > "Num Lock" > hold "Alt" > 0160 > release "Alt"...  Repeating hold "Alt" > 0160 > release "Alt" for each additional Icon) i.e. 5th icon your remove text from, hold "Alt" > 0160 > release "Alt" 5 times, making 5 spaces

0160 is window xp's code for space.. one space for 1st icon, two spaces for second & so on ... See "external link"

My computer was simple: Rename > space

MY PROBLEM, NEED HELP... right clicking recycle bin either on desktop... or where you change recycle bin icon... (right click desktop > "properties"> desktop> "customize desktop") does not give a "rename" promt

Please help, Recycle bin... (nice icon, like to keep) is last icon on desktop with text

Thanks,
Matt

To change the name of the Recycle Bin desktop icon, open Regedit and go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

and change the name "Recycle Bin" to whatever you want or don't want (don't type any quotes).

Always be careful when editing the Registry.

Nope, not on mine... right click recycle bin icon > properties > ...

This gives me 3 tabs: Global, Local Disk (C:), and Recovery (D:) None of which contains a text field to rename or remove text from Title.

Thanks anyway,
Matt

I just like the way quoting looks....

Tryed that too, (regedit,)not working either. I double click top line (Default - REG_SZ - Recycle Bin) and I get an edit string window with 2 text fields, value name:, and value data:

Value name is blank, and won't except text
Value data says Recycle Bin ... I changed it to Bucket to get a visual but nothing happened. I close the window & re-open regedit and it still says Bucket, but icon text remains Recycle bin.

I also found a download zip (I scanned) that was suppose to add a registry key that would add "rename" to right click of icon... that didn't work either. Says it was successfully added, but rename is not there on right click of icon

The way I changed recycle bin icon to vista was: right click desktop > properties > desktop > customize desktop > change icon (changed empty & full recycle bin icons to vista, both work fine) Was that wrong way? Is that why nothing is working? Is there a cliff nearby I can jump off of?

Click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} in the left panel.

In the right panel right-click on LocalizedString and select Modify. Change or remove the text in Value Data then exit and reboot.

That should work.

1. Open registry editor by going to Start -> Run, and execute regedit.
2. Navigate to the following registry branch:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\
3. 4. Double click on LocalizedString or right click on LocalizedString and select Modify to modify the registry value.
5. You should see the default value of “@%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,-8964″. Delete or remove the default value and key in your desired new recycle bin’s name in text, e.g. “Garbage Bin” (without quote).
6. [color="#FF0000">Refresh your desktop
or Windows Explorer by pressing F5. You will see the new ‘recycle bin’ name.
7. Optionally, you can also modify the text of InfoTip, commonly known as tooltip what display certain help tip, guide or description about Recycle Bin when the mouse is hovering on Recycle Bin icon on desktop. The default text is “Contains files and folders that you have deleted.” Simply double click on InfoTip, or right click on InfoTip and select Modify to change the text of the info tip.
8. The default value is “@%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,-22915″, simply change it to another description that you want the tooltip to be.
9. Refresh the desktop to make it effective.
