Kamakura, about 100km (60 miles) south of Tokyo is a very unique place, having been the capital of Japan from 1185 to 1333 AD, after which the capital returned to Kyoto. These were turbulent years under the leadership of a warlord Minamoto Yoritomo. Many temples were built, including many that reflected the influencing of refugee Zen Buddhists from China - including the 13 metre tall Daibutsu - a statue of Amida Buddha, shown with my 6'5 frame in front below:

I hope you ate some sakura flavored ice-cream when you where there. The ice-cream stand is just across the road from the entrance to the temple grounds. This time of year the probably have sakura flavor. May is the ajisai (hydrangea) flavor which doesn't really taste like anything.
