Hero....or Killer of Dreams?

JU Writing Club Submittal

Scene, inside a church, at a funeral.

Several people were inside, some were crying, some sitting quite still, staring at the coffin placed in front of the pew…..

Jeremy couldn’t believe he was dead. His lover of five years gone just like that.

“Death becomes him” Jeremy thought to himself. “My Oscar….it’s so sad to see you lying there, so lifeless!” “How could this be?”

Jeremy looked up noticing the other occupants looking at him…

”Did I say that out loud?” He wondered to himself.

Dan sat in the back of the church. He didn’t want anyone to see him. He didn’t want them to think he was a queer too.

He stared straight ahead, almost unseeingly. “There lays my best friend”. His eyes drifted slowly over the box, ornate, bejeweled, so him. Oscar would have chosen that box himself!

He wasn’t aware Oscar was sick. Dan used to go with Oscar and Jeremy to some of those parties. Not because he was a queer…but for the company. He had been in one relationship too many, with one woman too many. On one particular occasion he was feeling really low and Oscar had dragged him to one of his ‘affairs’ as he referred to the parties they attended.

Believe it or not he had a good old time too!

Throughout the years, somehow he and Oscar had lost touch. It was his fault really because he moved away. It’s been a long time since he set foot in his old neighborhood. He heard about Oscar’s death and came to show his respects.

“What a sad, sad thing to have happened”!

There was a woman and a little girl sitting on the other side of the pew. Both were dressed in black, with little lace doilies on their heads.

“Momma why did Mr. Oscar die?” Whispered her daughter loudly.

“Shhhush honey!” her mom whispered back. “I’ll tell you more later, but he was a sick man. Now just be quiet ya hear!”

The little girl nodded and sat quietly. Her mother looked over at the coffin.

“I’ll always be grateful to you Mr. Oscar for saving my baby’s life. Heaven knows if it wasn’t for you she would not be sitting beside me now!”

She shuddered visibly, every time she remembered how close she came to losing Danielle. One minute she was beside her, the next she was all the way out in the busy road! If it wasn’t for the kind gentleman who ran out after her, she would have been splattered against the road….“Thank you Mr. Oscar”, she whispered.

Nellie sat moving restlessly. “Man I could kill for a smoke right now!” She muttered to herself.

“Son of a bitch! To think that I was in love with you! You Son of a bitch, for so long! How could I not know you were on the down low?!”

“:Promises, promises…since we met that’s all you gave me!”

Yes, Oscar made a lot of promises to Nellie. He was going to make her famous. She was a beautiful woman; she had a beautiful voice and a body to go with it! Unfortunately for her Oscar was full of lip service as usual but she didn’t know that.

“I was his whore, his high-priced call girl!” “He kept pawning me off to pay off one debt or another. Yes, I was a whore that’s what I was – but no more!” She thought.

“No more!” Nellie muttered. She stood up and made an angry noise. “Bastard, may you rot in hell!” She shouted as she stormed out of the church, angrily brushing away the tears that flowed freely now.

“There’s got to be a good man out there for me and I’m going to find him!”

Very interesting. I like that this invokes the idea that hero worship is totally subjective. Well done...

How did I miss this?

This was great, donna! I liked the perspective from inside all those heads. Very good! You need to do the fiction writing thing more often...

Well done, Donna. Very interesting. You now to need to write in some more challenges, and I don't want no excuses, either.

Interesting, with lots of possibilities for further development, I particularly liked the fact that Oscar was on the down-low, which is a facet of Black American culture that's hardly ever mentioned. Did Oscar die of AIDS? Do his male friends know it if he did?

I particularly liked anxious Dan. You could do much more with him and Jeremy...

Good work.

Enjoyed it. I like that your reality is framed by relationships. I see a perspective that people can be more than just good or evil. We are often complex.

Yes! It's quite a conundrum isn't it?! It's actually widely discussed on black television, BET and there have been some programs on HBO and in books centered on black culture than I see anywhere else.

I'm tempted to do that! I thought the story took an interesting turn after I wrote it. It was kind of freestyle, I'm thinking about adding more to it.

Yes, I was trying to go by the lyrics San Cho posted and went with that flow although not to the letter!

Glad you guys liked it!
