Brad's ongoing GalCiv update thread

Hi gang. I won't be around today, I'm at home -- my wife and I are moving to a new home. Even as I type this in the basement, there are boxes all around me and my wireless laptop is connected to my cellphone so I'll make this brief.

We'll hvae updates via SDCentral next week to GalCiv but those who want to try early patches here they are:

1) Some people have reported that the game crashes when they submit their score.

Try this new DLL (replace the one in your GalCiv directory):
http://www.stardock.com/temp/sdnetlib.dll

Here is an update that adds a few nice little tweaks. Just unzip with the directory structure intact into your GalCiv directory.
http://www.stardock.com/temp/gc101a.zip

Let us know how these work for you.

Ok, David S. It appears that you are using an old old beta. Only scores from 1.0 and up will show up on the Metaverse.

A Lobos, your scores are not in the database at all. Possibly a problem with GalCiv submitting them. Are you behind a firewall? using any Ad Blockers? Dialup? Are you connected when you submit?

No, no firewall. I'm not using any ad blockers (although I wish I were!), I'm on a cable modem, and I'm connected when I submitted. I was monitoring this at the same time I was submittting this morning, and this board is updating fine (through Stardock Central). The game doesn't pause or give me any indication that it didn't go through. Could it be a problem with my serial number?

A saved game consists of the contents of the directory with the name of the save and the single file in the directory above it with the name of the save game.

In a default GalCiv install this would be:
c:\Program Files\Drengin\galciv\Data\SaveGames\

The easiest way to send it in is as a zip file with the directory structure preserved.

T-Man, I am not using a beta version. I removed the beta and did a fresh install of the game (after first trying to upgrade from the beta). Is there a registry key I should edit or remove that may be sending the beta info? Again, the game was completely removed and re-installed.

I am connected through a "d-link" ethernet 10/100 switch/router. I have two comps. hooked up to the same connection. Could this in any way be causing trouble in uploading. I've never seen it cause any problems in the past in this way. I'm also running Win XP if it's of any help.

Magnus

Yep, figured that one out. Although I should have zipped the folder instead of the individual files. I came to that realization after I sent it off to T-Man. DOH!

Lobos,

I have a temp table in my database where I am storing the submission data before its parsed into the highscore table. This piece does not care about what the data is. It just saves it. Your submission is not getting there. But to answer your question, no, it does not reference your email. It goes by playername and serial number.

I received your saved game and I was able to submit it successfully. So we are really not sure why the submission is not getting to us.

David,

When was the last time you submitted a game? The one I see that is a beta was submitted on the 24th. Also, just as a check, what is the date on your Galciv.exe?

Lobos, if you are willing what happens if you by pass your router and submit a game that way. This way we can either elimate routers are nail it down as being part of the problem.

I'll give it a try with a strait connection without the router and let you know. Thanks!

T-Man, I messed up my empire name when I created it for the Metaverse is there a way I can change it or you can change it? Currentl, "Dreadlords" should just be "Dread Lord". Also, out of curiosity what backend database are you using? MSSQL? Thanks.

Unfornately I haven't had the time to code in stuff for you to edit your account. Hopefully next week. But sure, I will edit that for you.

Many thanks. Have I mentioned, how much I like elves? Your ears read like they may be a little pointy as well, perhaps from associating with CariElf. :) You Stardockians are all alike in offering outstanding support. Thanks again.

T-Man, I submitted a game earlier today, and like 4 on the 26th and 27th (all the same game, but multiple tries to submit). The date on my galciv.exe is 2/26/2003. FWIW, I am also behind a router. Perhaps this problem is related to that. I was also having the crash issue when Galciv submitted, but Ian's new .dll has fixed that. I will wait and see if Lobos can get through w/o router use, and try the same.

OK, I have resubmitted the same game strait, without the router. BTW, how long does it take to get from our comps., and onto the top score board? I was wondering about that.

I have submitted one game, a whooping 3 pointer, which shows up on the Metaverse. I only mention it because I use a Netgear wireless router. Of course, it may be a bit of a payback for being encased in crystal for eons by the Arnor.

Oh, by the way, it did take considerably longer to submit the data strait, for some reason. This morning, with the new DLL, it would drop me back to the main menu within 5 seconds (give or take), but this last upload took almost 20 seconds. Don't know what that means, if anything, but there it is....

Well, don't see anything on the board yet, and it's been almost 30 minutes. I guess it's something other than the switch then. Should I try to reinstall the game then try it out? I'm running out of ideas. :notsure:

If it helps, it's a retail copy, and I have everything updated (bonus material and new multimedia), all updated through SDC.

Your score should show up immediately. But however, it didn't get through again. :(

I tried to submit a game a couple of days ago and it never showed up.

I have a simple router setup, but I am behind a NAT and connected through a DSL line. I noticed that nobody else mentioned being behind a NAT. It comes down to how the data is submitted to the metaverse. I am currently assuming that it is using HTTP, which would be able to get past most firewalls and NAT setups. But, perhaps somebody from StarDock could confirm that it isn't likely to be a network issue.

BTW, I am using the retail version of the game and I only tried to submit it once on the 26th (early morning). I may try to submit it again tonight if I can figure out how to do it.

What would be nice is if the game could tell us if it couldn't reach the metaverse servers. I've submitted two games and haven't seen either one. One thing is I don't understand is why we have to go to the metaverse page to register our player when the game already has all the information. Couldn't it be done from in the game?

rbloom - I use NAT on my router, so I wouldn't think it is that.

I may try to sniff my network tonight to see if I can figure out what is going on.
