Solar empire?

Confused about the title

I'm confused about the title of the game (forgive me if this is explained in the story or something). Where's Sol in the game and what's the solar empire? There's 3 factions and no mention of earth or Sol (so far).

Umm...if it makes you feel better just pretend its called: Sins of a Star Empire

The star Sol exists in Sins, I colonized the entire system in my last game. However, it does not carry over any familiar planets. I had a planet called Prometheus and like 4 other planets in it, none of which exist in our solar system.

Interestingly enough, while "Sol" is indeed the name of our local star, I'm reasonably certain "Solar" refers to stars in general -- though a true lingual differential has yet to take hold due to your one-planet status, which has infested our language with all sorts of confusions that we're going to have to sort out.

Just like the language is going to have to come up with a gender non-specific pronoun, so we don't have so say he or she when we don't know the appropriate gender (without twisting the language around uncomfortably).

The game is about the Sins of the people that make up the TEC, and how their past SINS have come back to haunt them (the Vasari) and then top that off with a new threat the Vasari who are running from their own threat!

solar refers to our system.

it is being used to refer to other systems as well.

but i believe the true reference for outside of our system is steller.

ummm Sol refers to our system.... Not Solar.

I agree with others that only our star system is called Solar system. Other stars have their names and their systems are called after them.

solar system
One entry found for solar system.

Main Entry: solar system
Function: noun
: the sun together with the group of celestial bodies that are held by its attraction and revolve around it; also : a similar system centered on another star

remember when they came up with solar system they didn't know there were others. i am sure the smartest ones could have figured it out.

and i am sure that as we go into space and colonize other systems they will probable take the name with them.

Agreed, any star can have a solar system, since "Sol", while referring to our sun, basically translates simply as "Star".

I think the "Solar empire" bit refers to the story of the game, because the TEC and such exist in only a handful of solar systems, while "Star empire" is only really a stones throw away from "Galactic empire" which does not apply in Sins.

It's about the sins of all three races in the game.

ok we need a new race. the race of yarlen. the only ship they can build is the cobalt light frigate. one of them.

ever watch stargate and wonder "how the hell do they know what a day is?"

I'm reasonably certain you're correct.

"the" solar system refers to the sun and earth solar system, but "sol" the root word, does translate to star, so in essence a "star system" vs. "the" "star system" is the basic distinguishing element.

unfortunately there exists no modifier for solar in "sins of a solar empire" (as it itself is the modifier of empire) so the point is ambiguous, and therefore, moot.

ROFL

I agree with others that only our star system is called Solar system. Other stars have their names and their systems are called after them.

So you have an "Centarian System" and a "Betelgeuseian System" and who knows what else? Odd, most books I've read (seeing as how Sci-Fi is the only place where this particular lingual knot can be examined) tend to use "Solar System" to refer to any star's collected bodies.

Though, again, this is at least in part due to confusion in the language, which assumes that "sun" and "Sol" must be synonymous (because so far we haven't had to make the distinction).

Hmmm, only 2 of the 3 races have anything to do with Sol...and even there, only in the sense that they originated from it prior to their 'evolutionary' divergence.

Of course, I still think the Sins of a Solar Empire title is cool regardless.

Besides, what is in a name? If the game rocks, it could be called 'Good Deeds of Funhouse Playmates' and I would still play it.

You people do realize that "Solar System" can be referring to our system or any other system by its definition? So this whole "what does it refer to" topic is kind of...already answered. SO YOU'RE ALL WRONG! C'ept for Ron Lugge (I think...)
