Vista SP1 - What Would You Like to See?

Vista SP1 - What Would You Like to See?

With the recent talk of Vista SP1 and the release of it to a selective group of testers, I thought it would be a good time to ask our users what updates or upgrades you would like to see with the first Service Pack?

Some things I would like to see:
  • The ability to auto-hide the Sidebar
  • Reducing the System Restore space
  • Various performance fixes
  • Device driver improvements

It's interesting to see what everyone wants from Vista SP1.

But I can tell you what you are gonna get and then say I told you so again.

You can expect MS to put out a half finished SP. So you will see about half of the Vista machines around the globe get messed up. Reformats will be the normal thing being discussed. You can expect more and more people complaining about MS and Vista then switching to XP.

In the end it will take SP2 to fix SP1 just like it did in XP.

Mark my words. After all I'm the one who said we would see all these problems with Vista.

That whatever MS decides to do, that they get it right.

Island Dog - your right. I might have stretched that one a bit. I forgot that all of them are already messed up because they have Vista on them now.

On a serious note some systems will get messed up. It happened with XP.

A decent boot screen would be a good start almost went back to my copy of xp pro but then it would mean me explaining to the girlfriend why I paid £130.00 for vista ultimate just to rip it out of my machine and many times I felt like doing just that.

Get her used to it now, ESAF. After 13 years of marriage, my wife no longer thinks twice when I put garbage software that I bought up for sale at a garage sale for $5 a week later!

I want the "Delete", "Move To" and "Copy To" icons back in a toolbar in Windows Explorer and in the right-click menu. If there is a way to show them now in Vista, I haven't found them yet.

Registry tweaks for "Copy to" and Move to" for Vista can be found here:

I would like to see the ability to have the details pane to be able to be on the top and not just on the bottom also as an additional skin, the old Longhorn skin. But of course neither one is gonna hapen...

Before I forget the ability to remove the organize/views bar.

I would like for a window to retain the same layout every time. If I want my Game Explorer window to have large icons in a certain size window, I would like it to save that setting and open that way the next time. As is, I could have a detail list the next time or whatever random setting it chooses.
I would also like to see a UAC that allowed me to do something simple, like create a save game in Doom3. Make that a part of a UAC safe list. As UAC is, it's best turned off if you a power user. I would like to see it fixed, as it is a great idea, just badly implemented in its current state.

Something else I would like to see....folder views remaining as they were set, rather than returning to default after reboots, etc.

Reformats will be the normal thing being discussed. You can expect more and more people complaining about MS and Vista then switching to XP.

Glad the majority didn't follow your brand of logic with the advent of the motor car/vehicle...otherwise we'd still be collecting our kids from school on horseback.

Or worse still, researchers gave up on cures/vaccines for common diseases like cancer; glaucoma; kidney/liver disease....the clap, all because the first few guinea pigs cried out: "I don't like (the taste of) it."

That wouldn't be a bad idea with the new problems of global warming due to cars in part.

Would also be better in terms of weaponry....had the gun not gotten lots of takers, wars might have still been fought with spears (not the Britney variety) and bows n' arrows ....maybe a bit of stone throwing instead of cannon-fire.

Spot on, Kona, not all (supposed) progress is wanted, needed or even wise.

yes, please get back on topic. There are many other Vista hater threads where uninformed opinions are in abundance.

Something else I'd like to see a fix for: that Vista retains its Restore points when dual booting between one OS and the other. At present, if you boot into XP and back, you lose all your restore points....would also be better if Vista's restore interface was similar to XP's, the current list isn't very functional or informative.

Why was I in System Restore on such a stable OS (for all those Vista haters who just gotta ask/know), I installed some software for my new soundcard and something cocked up ....a sys restore just seemed quicker and easier than messing about with uninstalls and registry cleaning, etc.

I would like to see the complete system back up in Ultimate work correctly. As is, you can only restore to the exact same size hard drive you backed it up from. If you wanted to replace your drive with a larger one than you had, you are unable to restore to it. Also, even if you have multiple back ups from different time periods, you are only able to choose the latest one to restore.

I'm still seeing some pretty good suggestions, aside from the global warmning myth comments and the anti-Vista nonsense we come to expect in a Vista thread.

A firm date, (or at least a reasonable time frame), on when it's getting released and a list of what the expected fixes are and new or improved functionality, (if any) are. I think that this is an interesting thread but wouldn't it be nice to know MS is listening and taking suggestions seriously. Anyone know what the requisites are to be part of a "selective group" of beta tester are?

I would like a larger icon cache size without a third party program. I would like to be able to turn off the message, (your search my take a couple billion years because indexing is turned off).

The start button to not to say start, umm Duh!. Actual support for 64 bit. balloon tips to have a clear vista like background.

Have vista tell applications the right amount of my graphics cards memory or I think thats direct x not sure. Oh I'm in for the windows staying where I put them.

Better game support for dx9 I should be able to control space satellites with my rig and no way in hell I'm gonna shell out another grand for graphics cards so I can play dx 10.

Windows mail to start a hell of allot faster than it does, what the heck is it doing anyways.

Fix the damn Icon size thing, drives me nuts, big icons little icons sheesh! Make it easier to hide updates at the update place, My god how many language packs does a person need.

Have a message from Bill Gates appear saying thanks for battling with this OS to get your toys to run, I'm getting good at it now-tweak,tweak.

Have the bloody defrag thing at least show me that it's doing something while I'm sitting there staring at it.

Make windows defender actually defend. Fix internet options delete all, and it does but not really because it keeps it in a .dat or .index file, what am I to do if my wife gets computer savvy? oh and you can't delete it without the aid of a nuclear program.

Get rid of the user experience thing they don't care or want to know what my user experience has been.

Fix when I need help and a window pops up it saying it can help me with my problem and takes me to a webpage that says does not exist, never existed, or never will exist.

I want a fix for the shortcuts that won't delete after you have uninstalled a program. I have had to reinstall programs again so I could delete the icon or else vista tells me the program is not responding, Hello it's not on the pc anymore so let me delete it!

Allow me the right to get rid of that file in my temp folder that never deletes and says it's in use, really by whom it's temporary isn't it?

Oops did I say that out loud? These are minor things I would like to have fixed in Sp1.

Later,
