Proposing a 2v2 tournament.

Hello all,

Thought I would propose a 2v2 tournament with the possibility of prizes for those that finish in the top three (or two).

(*cough* and here is where I graciously look in the direction of the development team for some token little prizes *cough* collectors edition *cough*).

This post sets out the type of tournament I am proposing and provides a short rule set and rationale for a 2v2 tournament.

Basically, quite a few people are having issues hosting, so the first rule is that each team has at least one member that can host. The danger with a 1v 1 tournament is that both players may be unable to host. Besides this I also think 2v2 battles are much more fun.

Of course, we could go for a larger number of players but I think most will be annoyed with the excessive lag and the greater instances of out of sync errors and drops, which are more likely to occur. Also, with a small player base anything beyond 2v2 would seem a bit pointless.

As games in Sins take so long I am proposing a basic single match knock out system, with teams matched up randomly at the start and progressing, should they win, along the well known tournament horizontal ‘tree like’ ladder.

Now for some basic rules.

1) All matches at a given ladder tier (or round) are to be played on the same map. Maps to be announced latter and suggestions are most welcomed.

2) Victory conditions are, rather obviously, to eliminate the opposing team.

3) Each tier (or round) of matches are to be played within one weak of the match-ups being posted, and players are encouraged to take the initiative in arranging times to meet and play. Once you have decided on the date and time to play you must inform the tournament coordinators.

4) Results for the given match up or battle must reach the tournament coordinators within the week time limit (i.e. once the match-ups for a given tier (or round) are posted, you have one week to arrange your battle, play the battle and then report it).

5) Teams who do not make the mutually pre-arranged time to play their match will be disqualified. A 30 min grace period from the time of the pre-arranged match will be allowed. However, the opposing team may, at their discretion, waiver this rule and wait for the team that is running late or arrange to play the match at another time. Note that the match must still be played within the week time limit and failure to do so will result in the team that was unable to make the initial match-up commitment, being disqualified.

6) The use of exploits is, again rather obviously, not allowed and will result in the offending team being disqualified. All accusations must be made to the tournament coordinators immediately and some form of evidence provided.

7) Regarding rulings and arbitration of disputes the tournament coordinators word is final.

Well that’s it for the rules and on a final note, I would ask all players to try and record their games via FRAPS. This is so we can view what I hope will be some lovely battles and match-ups. And also so that the possible inclination to use an exploit will be lessened, given the video record of every thing you do in-game. Whether the use of FRAPS should form a rule I leave for you to decide.

Thanks for reading and let me know what you all think. If responses are positive and a few details ironed out, I’ll make another post for people to sign up to the tournament and exchange contact details.

Don't forget to define those, explicitly!

Ron, I am hoping people in the know would help compile and define a list of these, and feel free to contribute your own thoughts on this. Perhaps a dev can comment? After all, these are some of the 'details' that I allude to and hope to discuss in this thread.

Apart from this, would you be interested in this tournament?

It's easy to check for that stuff as Sins automatically records every game (this also avoids the need to use FRAPS unless you want to post it gametrailers.com). Everyone can review the match's replay when it's over and then if there is some sort of conflict we can take a look at the supposed 'exploit'. Other than that, most exploits will cause a sync bug and the game will warn you itself.

Well, assuming you mean exploit in the sense of abusing some bugged mechanic, I can't think of any yet (except possibly the two-Dunov capships approach... don't know if thats really an exploit though, or just really good tactics).

As Blair said, pretty much any attempt to hack or cheat would self-advertise the expoit, as things desynch.

Excellent, I think we will be able to cover the exploits then? I suggested FRAPS for that reason too Blair, that we can host them elsewhere and show them? Now before I go watch the grand prix...any thoughts regarding my *cough* *cough* requests Blair ?

I would definitely want to be in on this. Looks like it would be good fun if we could get enough people to go around.

Oh, btw, while I am interested, I don't have the time / reliability to engage in this tournament. My schedule is just a little too full, and I'm not likely to have uninterrupted "blocks" large enough for serious 2V2 games.

I am thinking that if we can get a minimum of eight teams (16 players) we can make a go of it. Of course devs can always enter too and I would personally encourage it

This is really good idea , tho we might have problems hosting.
Imo we should do this...
16 players. Each non-hoster pairs up with a hoster so this way we can atleast host.

Just a quick idea...

QuarterFinals - Fire+Ice
SemiFinals - Kharaks Cross
Finals - Flashpoint

well, definately a good idea and with one week to organise and play a match it shouldn't be a time problem, at least not in the near future. yes, I am interested, but after forming teams and before tournament games some practice would be good to get to know your teammate. but then, we are not in that much of a hurry are we?
