The private Beta 5 rumour

The private Beta 5 rumour

I have participated in the Beta process since June, but I have rarely posted on the Forum. I believe that I belong to a "silent majority" of pre-order customers who simply do not have the time to play a lot and to post expert analyses -- on the sophisticated level of the forum regulars who have played a lot of Sins games (no sarcasm intended).

I can consequently understand why some IC and SD policy-makers might not be enthusiastic about letting "us" (the members of the silent majority of casual gamers) experience a pre-release Beta 5.

On the other hand, do IC and SC intend to limit their sales to a few dozens of MP/RTS fanatics and forum experts ?

I have already paid with my June pre-order, but I have friends who would perhaps purchase the final game if I issued a recommendation. SD marketing must consider that they need to sell tens of thousands of copies of the game. Having a select and elite "private Beta 5", in that commercial context, does not seem to make (business) sense.

Why keep it restricted and secret ? If Beta 5 was public, the forum experts and the IC/SD buddies would still have the possibility to have a special access to the main IC/SD policy-makers, who would consider their reports and suggestions as the cream of the crop -- but IC and SD would also have "more eyes" to catch bugs and more PC-configurations to test the pre-gold-master version on.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, it would be smart marketing diplomacy to include the "silent majority" which has already paid. I agree that we do not have a God-given right to get our hands on that Beta 5 just because we have pre-ordered, but excluding the majority of customers who have already paid does not seem to be a smart business move. As I have stated, even though most of us do not play that much and do not post on the Forum, we can recommend the purchase of the final, retail product to family members and friends.

I humbly understand that IC and SD do not need to have my non-expert opinions on Beta 5, but if they want to sell tens of thousands of copies, what would it cost them to allow the "silent majority" of the pre-order customers to play at Beta 5 ? We might not be MP/RTS fanatics and forum regulars, but we do possess a power to influence the Market.

For example, I teach to 160 students (age 18 to 20) per semester (320 per year !), and I sometimes talk about PC games to relax the atmosphere of my classes. I have recently recommended HMM5/TOE, and some of my students went out and bought the stand-alone expansion because I issued a very enthusiastic recommendation.

Some of you have become very chummy with the key IC and SD policy-makers (no sarcasm intended) : well, good for you if they let you have the privilege of having fun with Beta 5. But I wonder how many thousands of copies of Sins those few IC/SD buddies can sell ...

Thrawn, you have some anger management to take care of. Do you get pushed around by freshmen alot? I bet you do, there has to be some source for all that anger to people younger than you.

At the risk of adding fuel to the flames... I do believe I remember something about Yarlen saying Eets was on a 'list' several days back.

I took this to mean a list of rather annoying people on IRC (a joke), rather than a supersecrit list of ubertesterguineapig victims.

Carry on by all means, it is entertaining

... wow...

as amusing as this all is... some one really should just delete this thread.

Annatar11 & Destraex have the right idea... nuff said

On second thought, some could see deletetion as an infringment on free speach, in wich case we should take some responsibility and just stop posting in this thread all together... I think the whole community would be best served that way.

We have no free speech here; we volonterrily (hurray misspelling!) signed it away on a contract to join this forum :o

*waits for backlash.

That is right. YOU HAVE NO FREE SPEECH HERE. This is not the topic to be acting like a retard on and whining and complaining, etc. Maybe the admins should not only delete this topic but delete YOU too!

Um, no. Free speech is the right to say and write anything you feel like, however it places no obligation on anyone else to print it, store it, read it, listen to it, or otherwise support you in it. Since this is a privately owned forum, the moderators have every right to say what may, and may not, occur here. Contrary to to Kiernyc's opinion, that doesn't give anyone else a right to say what should, or should not, happen though. (Suggestions on how to be taken more seriously are always useful... childish BS isn't.)

You know the fact that the devs haven't really peaked at this thread means one(or both) of two things.

a) They are laughing their heads off
b) They are crossing of names from their list of Beta 5 testers

One or the other or both, I must have myself a piece of that apple pie!

Oh and as to what Anny said, he is right. This may be all just a rumor, and if it then all is fine and dandy, and if it isn't then all is still fine and dandy.

Period.

Now for the new rumor... Blair likes to wear tutus and dance with Pink Space Ponies.

THATS what that funny thing I saw was..... at first I thought someone spiked my turkey.

But quite apparently it was Blair wearing a tutu and dancing with a pink space pony

Seriously though, that was a cool space pony.

C) They're enjoying their thanksgiving off. (Thread started on that most fowl of days, and today is a holiday for many groups as well). Even if one or two devs may have poked their heads in (*cough Kyro cough*), I'm betting a response to this thread's topic (distinct from the behavior of those involved) is the kind of thing that requires an "OK" from higher up, especially given that the entire furor was started over what was, at the very least, a poorly considered IRC comment.
