Where to start? New to beta

By chance I stumbled upon this game as it was mentioned briefly in a post on some other forum and I am glad I did. I know the main purpose at the moment is to test for bugs but I'd also like to not suck at playing so much so I had a few questions about getting started.

1. Whats the most important thing to concentrate on early game? Economy or Military?
2. When building up your economy, which is better to give more attention to.. expansion, research, or infrastructure?
3. When putting a military force together, which is better.. greater numbers or more experience?

A one word answer to all 3 questions is: depends

Unfortunately, it really does. There's no best way to start, and it depends a lot on the map and who you're playing against. For example, setting up a good economy, with trade stations and such, slows down your early military production and takes time, both of which are bad if you're playing a very small map. Unless your opponent is not focusing on military, if you spend too much on economy and not enough on military, you're going to get squished.

In general, though, you want to expand as quickly as possible. Scout early and scout far, leave your scouts in systems you know your opponent has to go through so that you have advanced warning and can see his fleet makeup and hopefully have time to gather a proper defense/interception, or just hit his undefended planets instead. Research, in the early game, sucks a lot of valuable crystals, which are gathered slowly until you get several crystal mines under control. So, in the early game it pays off to research exactly what you need and nothing more. For example, if there's a volcanic or ice world within 2 (maybe 3) jumps of your homeworld, it's best to save enough resources to research ice/volcanic colonization ASAP because both planet types are very beneficial and sought after. But it makes no sense to spend the resources researching either if there's no immediate need for it.

As for military, only your capital ships gain experience, and in that regard avoid sending level 1s into battle as much as possible. If you can spare the credits, train them up to 3 before sending them to fight, they'll be a lot more effective. Numbers usually don't mean as much as ship types, but they are important. If you know your opponent is slacking a bit on military production, you can focus on it and have an advantage, though it's risky because if your fleet is defeated, it'll take you longer to rebuild because your economic infrastructure isn't too developed.

So, as you can see, it really does depend on a lot of things. The best advice I can give you is SCOUT. You need to know what your opponent is doing, and develop your own empire accordingly

Most of these depends on the map size, so I'll make #s (small) and #l (large)

1s : military, the enemy is close by and chances are you'll have a few scimishes. However, economy is still needed for defending planets.
1L : Economy, mainly spending in training/culture/research. If you plan thihngs correctly, you should have a decent income pretty quickly, and start fortifying planets + military

2s researching very early, than infanstructure. You don't get to do a whole lot of expansion.
2L : expansion, than infanstructure (keep you in the positive income, damn population) than research.

3s : more experiance, you don't get as many fleet supply as you normally do, so they count!
4L : More numbers, however experiance still plays a major role.

You can also watch some replays (Multi recently made a thread with a bunch, nice collection) to see how MP games go and what people do. Neat thing about replays, you can watch them from anyone's perspective

End of quote

Generally, I focus on economy but keep a strong military. During all phases of the game, I expand rapidly whenever possible, but in middle / late game, this generally involved conquering planets which isn't as practicable. Past actually colonizing planets, I generally develop them, (maximization of which requires that you research trade centers, culture generators, refineries and if TEC development mandate) with the occasional technology assist (I grab the crystal techs ASAP for example).

When it comes to military, a large and varied fleet usually works best, but experience really is the best teacher there.
