I tried a
tie
once
bought 3
new shirts
button down
white
with crisp
collars
kaki pants
docker like
tan
olive
black
with pleats
I cut my
hair
trimmed the
beard
brushed teeth for
a
colgate smile
took the
studs from my
ears
cut my
finger nails
and applied for
a job
the disguise
didn’t work
human resources
needed a cog for
the wheel
but I don’t roll
well
she said
“your resume is
impressive.”
I smiled on cue
bowed and said
thank you
“could you start
next week?”
sure I can
(after I cut my wrists
and swallow my soul)
I shook hands
broke out in a
cold sweat
and
left for home
