What do the number of trade routes mean?

If I have tech for two routes, does this mean two per empire or two total?

That's total for you (other empires have their own). Techs that increase trade routes by +1 will give you extra trade routes, aka a Good Thing(tm)... Don't confuse that with the +10 trade techs which are actually adding to the percentage income you get from trade routes.

Let me rephrase...if you have +2 Trade and have contact with two other empires, does that mean you can only send one route to each or two routes to each?

Your trade route number is total number of trade routes. So if you have 3 routes, you can only have three total -- doesn't matter if they all go to the same planet or if they're spread out over three empires; you only get three.

Economic menu, Trades sub-menu, upper part : you should have the list with all details and of course the max number of trade routes you are allowed to maintain at this time.
