Starship Quality +15% question...

The shipyard gives this bonus what does this do? Thanks for any help. :)

That leads to another question I had, which I won't bother starting a whole new thread for:

Certain things in the manual (and various other documentation) refer to things affecting *star systems*. For example, freighters from good economic "star systems" perform better than those from poorer ones.

Now, does this really mean "star system", or does it mean "individual planet"? For instance, if Earth is really rich, and Mars is really poor, but Mars creates a freighter, will it reap the same bonuses as a freighter built on Earth?

My assumption is: yes. However, the answer may very well be: no. It's definitely gotta be one of those, though. :)

I have often wondered the same thing.

Can anybody answer?

I believe that it is an attack and defense bonus for ships coming from that planet.

1. There are things that affect star systems like starbases and I believe that there are certain wonders that affect star systems like the hyperion production bonus. (I can't remember what the exact name is)

2. It has been my experience that there is no difference if a freighter was built on a poor world or a rich world. The actual benefit comes into the length of the trade route. The longer the trade route the more money will be made.

3. The user manual leaves much to be desired as far as manuals go. The manual was pretty much out of date before the game was released over a year ago. Even the unofficial FAQ is not completely correct anymore due to the new versions of the game. The FAQ will help quite a bit with basic strategy and tips.

I'm 99% sure it's the population of the whole star system that is important here. (And the population of the destination star system too.)

I agree.
Generally speaking, social improvements (including Capitals) affect the planet only, apart from Trade Goods and Galactic Wonders, which give a bonus to your entire race.
Starbase bonuses affect the entire sector (big map square), apart from galactic resources, which give race bonuses.

It is indeed the Star System that is important, not the individual planet. Trade routes operate off the economy level of the two endpoint systems, the distance between them, each participant's Trade ability rating, and Trade improving starbases.

The distance and the Trade rating/starbases are mulplicative factors, so they tend to contribute the greatest effect on a route, but they still require a viable economy on both endpoints to work.

And influence/culture_resistance improvements, which operate at the star system level.

Starships +15% increases the quality of ships built on that planet. Let's assume that there is a ship with the base stats of 40 attack and 20 defence. Also assuming that your race has no +weapon or +defense modifiers.

On a planet without a shipyard, the ship will be finished with 40 attack and 20 defense.

On a planet with a shipyard (+15% starships), the same ship will be finished with 40 * 1.15 = 46 attack and 20 * 1.15 = 23 defense. Add in advanced quality control (another +10%) and your ship will be 50 attack, 25 defense.

I don't know if your race's bonuses to weapons and defense are addative or multiplicative. In either case, they will make your ships even better. I don't believe that the +starships affects hps.

Hmmm... I was always thinking (didnt check out though) that Shipyard would yield a 15% increase in Hitpoints, not in Attack and Defense rates. :notsure: :notsure:

Are you sure?

It has been my experience that it is attack and defense and not hitpoints.

This is easy to find out though, just examine your ship once it is built by a planet with and a planet without the ship yard.

A good way to check on what bonuses are in effect for a planet is to click on the "Details" button, which is in the lower right.

For example, the Hyperion Manufacturing Center gives a +100 to production for a single planet only, not for the entire system.

Good point. I do this without thinking about it all the time. I am glad that you mentioned it.

NewfyScotian I agree with everything you said especially the lack lustered manual. :p

That is how I tell what bonuses are given to a ship after it is built to determine the bonuses I get for any built there. I use specific planets for building my fleet. :)

Well... i dont know but i can bet on that that you actually get increase in HP aswell as Attack ad Deffence abilities... i've seen so many ships(same type) with different HP... if the Shipyards dont do that so what then?!

i am not a builder anymore, but when used to, i actually also used just a few planets to build on my fleet, first of all it saves your cash, coz building all those shipyards on everyplanet will cost you loads, especially when you are playing on BIG maps with normal or abandan habitability. Where you get like 30+ planets to control. Ouchhh!

Ships get more hit points, etc when they go up experience levels in much the same way an RPG player character does. A Level 2 battleship is more powerful than a level 1 battleship.
