I do have a heart

I imagine that
most people reading
my thoughts
can find me
lacking of the
gentle virtues
love
compassion
charity
mercy
hope
and a little
kindness

I rant and rail
at every insult
a quick flip of
pen and tongue
cutting zorros
into critically
challenged
mush pans

I will not deny that
there are more than a few
deeds to convict me
of uncaring
and arrogant to the
plight of
goodness

I have fought my
battles with my demons
and manage to keep
them at bay
sarcastic wit and demanding
challenge
like rusty knives
do my cutting
then serve my meal

but I am not without
heart or soul
dark and black
though it may be
I trust in the savior and
cry tears of shame and
wonder to
prayer and
holy spirit

such things are deep
and treasured
and not for the
weak of stomach
there is no refracted
mirrored cathedral
or 24/7 televangelistic
charade

there is blood and pus
in the sores of
jesus
he is a junkie with the
72 hour shits
he walks in high heels
and entertains thoughts
of a sex change
operation
and unholy as that sounds
or looks written before
you
if you think otherwise
you chance goat over
lamb

I confess
a certain banality
it is the wear of decades
and true
my eyes have dimmed
the brightness of flowers
have lost slightly their
luster
but it stills warms me
when god shares a sunset
or encourages the goodness
of the ungood to expose
itself
babies and puppies are a
joy to play with and I am
generous to a fault

I do have a heart
it just needs to be oiled
now and then

beautiful, mf - listen, my secretary came in and told me how much she liked your writing - plus she's a cutie. Just thought I'd make your day - an innocent pretty young thing listening intently to your writing. But don't start pumping your package yet, she's married.

I had to mull this one over before I responded. I am figuring you are speaking of Jesus' comments of "whatever you have done to the least of these, this you have done to me...whatever you have not done to the least of these, this you have not done to me", in which case this statement is wholly in line with scripture.

(I must ask, btw, if you have ever read "the Ragamuffin Gospel" by Brennan Manning? If not, I would consider it a must read, as you are a seminary student...if you read it, feel free to email me...I'd love to hear your thoughts on the book).

An excellent piece, Johnny. I truly enjoy your blogs.

I feel like an idiot for not reading more sooner... Really fantastic stuff... Easily one of the most talented bloggers here... easily.

BAM!!!

Sorry everyone, but the reference I made to being in seminary was a joke. Although, for a brief moment in time I did attend an evangelical christian college. They convinced me of the error of my ways and escorted me off campus. I went on to finish at a proper state university.

Too bad, Johnny. You'd have made a wonderful minister.

I have gone a similar path. Conservative Baptist college, overwhelmed by the hypocrisy of it all, but still firmly dedicated to my faith, eventually finding my niche in ministry (for this reason, when asked my denomination, I often reply "Baptist trained, but nondenominational")

Anyway, I'd still recommend "The Ragamuffin Gospel". I think you would appreciate it.

I have read the cotton patch bible. I went to BIOLA University, then Cal State Fullerton, then Notre Dame. ABD in sociology. I will look into the Ragamuffin Gospel. Thanks.
