Colony ship sillyness

In another thread I mentioned that i changed Colony Ship to Colony Fleet to just add asthetic ideal to the notion that one ship could hold millions and billions. While combat transports are limited colony ships are not.
The more i think about it the entire idea of colony ship limits might be something to look at. troop transports can carry 1 bil; combat trans 2 bil; but a colony ship can fit an outrageous number of colonists. I find it hard to buy that you can build ship cheap (colony ships arent that bad for cost) and ship billions. Think of it thsi way its takes as much money to build battleaxe or frigate that it takes to build ship than can carry 8 billion (yes i did that). Now that would bei bid mudder of a ship; even bigger than the death star I figure. Thus Colonization is seldom that fast. A limit of a couple of hundred mil. heh talk about commuter squeeze.

How about the image from the fmv at the start of the game? That's a huge ship. Now pack it full of stasis pods or something like that. Sure, it isn't billions of people but it isn't bad.
Hmm, at 7'x2'x2' that's 28 sqr feet. For several billion people... hmm...

Well, if you have a ship 1 mile cubed that is 144Billion people in coffins.

I always just imagine the pop. is completely dessicated and on the other side a little robot dunks the little dust specks in water. Poof! Instant colonies!

Honestly, the suspension of disbelief is sometimes called for. Don't imagine it's one ship, for instance. Imagine it's a huge whole convoy plodding through space...

Col ships could/should be reduced to "logical" amounts of colonists, with fleet of transport needed to really populate a planet. It reminds me of SE4's "Proportion" mod, was exactly that, but SE4 allowed for automated transportation routes, in GalCiv it'll be a chore ...

Poof? Instant colony?

Hey, we just stumbled into a new random event candidate!

"Freeze-dried Civilians discovered on a nearby moon"
a. Add water and allow them to do as they please
b. Add water, stick them in a bowl and put them up on the mantle for the kids to see
c. Forget the water and just springly them like jimmies over a nice delicious bowl of space-vanilla ice-cream

Excellent! Between Battlestar Galactica and a new morale choice, we've put the fun back in the game! ;)

heh I understand the idea of suspending disbelief, but from strategic point of view moving billions to a new colony is bit to easy. Colonies should be strategic beachheads with populations that grow over time. Its far to easy to move so many at once that "presto" instant rapidly producing colony. Since production is tied to poplulation its makes fronteir colonies rather quick building; both pop and production wise. Moreover, ok lets tak eteh idea of ship 1 cubic mile (coffin filled); is it more cost effective to build frigate or a ship that big?? Mobving large armies and population should be tremendous, historical underatking; not a sea monkey kit ;p
