suggestion and help please

Warning, long post. I needed to vent on the last game. Scroll down for the sugestion.

I have been getting my @ss kicked in this game. Not that I'm complaining, I love the challenge :). The only problem is in military production. In my latest game, I was playing in a small galaxy with 5 races, random alignment. 1 sub-normal, the rest beginner. I started out in a crappy position, but decided to play it out anyway. I expanded to 3 star system with a total of 5 bases. The rest took their share with the Arceans (sub-normal) taking the most. I researced and built up my social structures while building constructors to build starbases. I attacked a minor race and took that planet. I had the highest economy, the highest technology, and an averag military with the highest ship being a battleaxe.

This is when all hell broke loose. Shortly after I took the alexian world, the arceans declared war on a minor race. Then the torians and drengins. Then the alterians. THis all happened within 5 turns. Seeing the arceans as an aggressor, and the pitiful state of the other races, I declared war on the arceans. I figured I would have the advantage since the arceans would be fighting on 4 different fronts. The only problem was the arcean fleet. Somehow, every ship in their fleet was worth 2 of mine. 2 frigates for one of theirs and so on. How did they gain this advatage? I had higher tech at the time, and I was only at frigate class ships.

Anyways, the arcean fleet destroyed my corvette, battleaxe and battlecruiser fleet. 2 frigates took out ten ships without destroying even one. The frigates attacked my starbase and were destroyed with ease. I maxed out military spending to bolster the fleet. After about 15 turns, I had 4 frigates and a hadnful of battlecruisers and corvettes. i had 7 worlds now, thanks to the yor defecting into my empire. Round 2 began as the arceans came at me with 3 ships. My new fleet of around 7 ships barely fought off the atack, losing all ships but a corvette. I was researching anything that added stats to my ships, but while doing this,my frigates somehow went from 49 to 39 hitpoints. WTF happened? After the second round, another fleet came in and wiped out my corvette. One of my planets was captured. I maxed out military again and started attacking with ships right off the assembly line.I fought back the attack and retook the world. It was severely damaged because of the arceans using tidal waves on it. The rest of the came went like that, until armed transports started coming at me. The transports alone were taking out 3 of my ships at a time. I destroyed all but one before my fleet was destroyed. The transport moved towards sol just as earth finished a starhammer. I told the hammer to intercept but it got there one turn to late :sniff!: Sol was attacked and captured and ruined because of the use of core disruption. I attacked with the starhammer and launched a counterattack with my only troopship left. I retook sol, but the planet was destroyed. It was a level 14. With my primary manufacturing center destroyed, my fleet production basicaly halved.

While all that was happening, the arceans also destroyed the drengins and the minor races. It also had the torians backed into a corner. The altrians were holding their own.

I was defeated within 30 turns. He didn't even send a warship my way. His damn combat transports were obviously enough :d

Now for my SUGGESTION: please make a ingame technology tree.I research alot of tech's at the wrong time simply because I don't know what techs lead to what I need for my stratey. Also, the transition from beginner to sub-normal is a big one. Maybe also make beginner a little harder. When I played on beginner, I destroyed the enemy with ease. The sub-normal guys put up a hell of a fight, at least for me.

This was only my fifth game and I am learning more each time. If anyone has any recommendations, I'm more than willing to listen

Thanks

"Now for my SUGGESTION: please make a ingame technology tree."

There are a couple available on JavaScout's site that you can DL and print, if you like. If you can't read the printed font because it's too small, just save the file and Alt-Tab. That said, after a few games you'll get used to the research path you like, and what techs lead to what.

Now to read the entirety of your post and see if there actually WAS a question in there...

I'm guessing that was the question (I stopped reading when I found it)?

There are three skills that matter here: Weapons Ability; Defence Ability, and Hit Points. You can boost those skills through your political party/ability picks at the game setup (which the AI also gets to do), as well as by mining Military resources with SBs on the game map, and by researching various military/industrial techs in the game. If the AI was War Party, that gives a 50% to hit points right there, and if he had a well-mined military resource or two under his control you're looking at, potentially, over a 100% increase in weapons and defence skills.

sorry, I guess I wound up just rambling. It's late and I got my ass kicked Yes, that was the question I wanted answered.

The game crashes when I alt-tab, as do most of my games. I guess I'll have to just play until I learn the tech tree. It's a shame an in game one wasn't concluded.

ANyway, thanks for your help

Danny, there's a site with the tree in a graphic format you can print out. It's helpful. Let me see if I can find it... hm....

oh here, check this out:

one thing that helps (although it seems counter intuitive) is set all of the AIs on sub-normal. This is easier than having just one on sub-normal.
When there is just one it will easily take most of the worlds and have a huge start ending in a senario like you ran into (the same has happened to me). If you set all of the AI levels the same they help keep each other in check so you don't get used right at the beginning.
