UK and European game owners.....tax...

I am in the UK and have just recieved my GalCiv diskd (thank you kindly StarDoc..:)) ..

Now I just had to get myself down to the Post Office to pick up my package (the game.. :p ).. and pay the Customs Tax £9...

Anyone else have to do that???

Over here it depends, if customs is active and decides to check the package I have to pay tax. If not it just passes.
I have to pay on about 2 out of 10 packages I receive.

This is for postal services only, when using DHL or UPS I always have to pay tax :(

Customs tax applies to all software delivered to you, including outside of the EU deliveries. Sometimes you get lucky, because it slips through. I have solved this problem by ordering it as a download (which is still tax free in Europe) and then let SD ship me the CD for US$ 10 shipping costs. The bill states the value is zero, so nothing can be taxed. ;)

I have ordered several games via the US as well as some books. I have never had to pays customs tax (hooray) In this case I downloaded it and paid in dollars via a credit card (so up yours Mister tax man).

You're liable to pay tax if the total order is more than £15 and it's from outside the EU. One other US publisher, whose name I'd better not mention, used to get round this by putting 'Computer Software - Value $1' on the tax declaration :) . As Jerry says they haven't worked out a way of taxing downloads yet.
